The Associate Director, International Student and Scholar Services is a professional position within the Office for International Programs. The Associate Director provides direct services to international students and scholars, oversees student programming, and supervises and supports the work of the International Student Advisors. As a staff member in a multi-function office, this position reports to the Executive Director of the Office for International Programs and assists the Executive Director with the planning and administration of the activities of the OIP. Essential Job Functions:
-Serve as Primary Designated School Official (PDSO) for F-1 international students and as Responsible Officer (RO) for J-1 Exchange Visitor Program. Manage all batch and real-time SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) reporting.
-Advise all international students, scholars, and their dependents on visa acquisition, maintenance of F-1/J-1 status, and employment authorizations. In consultation with the Executive Director, resolves unique and difficult issues that arise with international students, including nuanced immigration compliance issues.
-Function as the liaison between academic departments and outside legal counsel regarding Permanent Residency application process. Work with academic hiring departments on reviewing, processing, and filing all H-1B employment-based visa petitions for international faculty and staff at the University.
-Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of orientation, cross-cultural programming and activities for all international students. Serve as advocate and resource for international students on campus, within the city of Chicago, and to federal and international agencies including the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State, embassies, and consulates.
-Educate international students on maintaining nonimmigrant status with the goal of retaining students through the duration of their degree program. Coordinate exchange programs and act as liaison for partner institutions abroad.
-Supervise the work of full-time, professional ISS staff members, graduate assistants, interns, and student staff, including providing guidance and constructive feedback and oversight of projects and programming. Contribute to the leadership of OIP and oversee the day to date management of the office in Executive Director's absence. -Additional duties as assigned.
