The SUNY COIL Center seeks a Director who will lead an internationally recognized unit of the SUNY Office of Global Affairs into its second decade, implementing Collaborative Online International Learning across SUNY and in collaboration with its university partners abroad. The Director will be responsible for refining the vision and practices of the COIL Center as this modality becomes more deeply embedded at the university and will also be responsible for the management and supervision of all major COIL Center projects. We seek an individual who will provide leadership across the virtual exchange field; will network effectively with peers at SUNY and abroad; will supervise COIL Center staff; and will provide fiscal and personnel oversight for COIL Center operations.
The COIL Center is a leader in the emerging field of collaborative online international learning, a teaching and learning methodology that fosters exchange between faculty and students with peers abroad through Internet-based communication tools. The COIL Center has created a model for supporting professors who develop co-taught multi-cultural online learning environments which emphasizes experiential collaborative learning between students in two or more countries. The classes may be fully online or taught in blended formats with face-to-face sessions at both schools, while collaborative student work takes place online. We presently work with over 60 partner campuses at SUNY and internationally.
- Provide leadership in the development of new COIL projects and skillful management of ongoing COIL projects across SUNY and internationally
- Contribute knowledge and expertise regarding the intersection of online and international education to SUNY campuses and their partners
- Develop an active outreach program across SUNY to engage more campuses and to help those which are already involved in strengthening and expanding their COIL activities
- Develop a plan for the expansion of the COIL Center that strengthens support for its main constituents (SUNY institutions and their partners) while creating a business model that offers sustainability through a mix of funding sources, likely to include grants, contracts, and membership or other types of fees
- Expand the Center's research agenda, its intercultural assessment program, and develop wider dissemination of its project outcomes
- Explore the development of partnerships, consortiums and joint programs with leading higher education organizations
- Represent the COIL Center through SUNY campus visits, at national and international conferences and via video conference and other online means
- Guide the refinement of the Center's professional development program including developing, expanding and refining in-person and online training materials and workshops
- Serve as liaison with other internal SUNY departments and a variety of stakeholders at SUNY and international institutions
- Recruit, hire and supervise full and part-time COIL Center employees, as well as grant-funded team members
- Provide vision and structure for the programming and administration of the annual COIL Conference including developing conference themes, priorities, key note speakers and panels
- Redefine the COIL Center's website as a hub for individuals and institutions at SUNY working with their international partners to share experiences, information, and good COIL practices
- Master's degree with 8-10 years' experience working in higher education, with direct knowledge of both international education and educational technology fields.
- Strong administrative skills and university organizational experience, including the ability to balance multiple priorities and make strategic decisions
- Knowledge of instructional design concepts, Web 2.0 applications and learning management systems (e.g. Blackboard, Angel, Moodle, etc.)
- Experience teaching, supporting, administering and/or evaluating COIL courses or other forms of virtual exchange projects in an educational context
- Demonstrated experience creating and managing departmental and/or project budgets
- Proven competency with grant writing and management
- Ability to work independently as well as collaborate effectively with a variety of stakeholders
- Exceptional communication and presentation skills, both in person and online
- Willingness to travel both within New York and abroad as needed
- Ability to conduct a variety of evaluations, assessments and research projects
- Experience living, studying, and/or working abroad
- Speaking and reading fluency in non-English languages and experience in the teaching of languages
