CWRU ranks 12th among the nation's private research universities in federal awards to support research and development. It received more than $200 million in 1998-99 from government, industry, and private sources for research and sponsored projects. These funds support approximately 2,000 research and training projects.
University faculty work through one of the nearly 100 designated research centers and laboratories, many of which are interdisciplinary in nature, in addition to traditional departmental facilities.
Research strengths of the University include biomedicine (including cancer, neurobiology, pulmonary functions, genetics, biomedical engineering); materials (ceramics and composites, polymers, diamond, designed surfaces); sensors (industrial and medical); and interdisciplinary studies (aging, management of non-profit organizations, international health, intelligent systems, regional economics, technology management, and urban poverty).
CWRU enrolls 9,600 students -- about a third in undergraduate programs, and the balance in graduate and professional programs. Approximately two-thirds of all students attend full-time. Students come to CWRU from 50 states, the District of Columbia, and nearly 100 countries. About 70 percent of freshmen are in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating classes; nearly 90 percent are in the top 20 percent.
