Appalachian State University

Appalachian State University is a constituent member of the University North Carolina System. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northwestern North Carolina, Appalachian has built a national and international reputation for offering outstanding academic programs. It is a medium-size university with the culture and atmosphere of a small university. With a total enrollment of 19,280, Appalachian offers 200 undergraduate majors and concentrations, 140 graduate majors and concentrations, and a number of graduate certificate programs. The University’s leadership strongly supports furthering Appalachian’s international preeminence and making available to all Appalachian students superb international experiences that will contribute to their effectiveness as future leaders in various sectors of the global community. Appalachian’s current strategic plan, “The Appalachian Experience: Envisioning a Just and Sustainable Future,” has a strong focus on global engagement. The University is currently in the process of completing the development of the Global Engagement Strategic Plan. More than 950 Appalachian students study abroad annually for academic credits. According to the Institute of International Education’s (IIE) 2018 Open Doors Report, Appalachian ranks 6th nationally among the comprehensive master’s institutions for the number of total undergraduate and graduate students participating in education abroad experiences for academic credit and 3th nationally among the same types institutions for the number of students who study abroad on short-term programs. Additionally, Appalachian hosts more than 155 international exchange students annually from more than 60 countries.
