Essential Job Functions

Serve as a resource for international students in both the Knowlton Center for Career Exploration and the Center for Global Programs. Share information and create programs that support the mission of both offices in the development and integration of academic plans, co-curricular opportunities, and career exploration. Support programs focusing on the unique needs of international students, including the development of comprehensive pre-arrival resources, on-site student orientation program, and other events and workshops during the academic year.

Within the Global Programs Office, assist with orientation and other programs, and collaborate with other offices on campus to offer support and advocacy related to the successful transition to and persistence of international students at Denison, including:

Advise the international student population, providing counsel on academics, co-curricular opportunities and cross/inter-cultural matters.

  • Assist with June Orientation, Pre-Orientation, airport arrival, and other orientation-related programming to welcome new international students to campus
  • Assist with other Center for Global Programs programming as needed
  • Create on-campus employment-related materials for the pre-arrival orientation program on the My ISS Portal
  • Assist in the development communication and outreach to the parents of international students.
  • Serve as official liaison to federal government agencies as a Designated School Official (DSO) ensuring compliance with immigration regulations.
  • Assist international students in preparing for curricular and post-graduate professional development opportunities, e.g. OPT, CPT, and STEM OPT Extensions
  • Authorize immigration benefits for international students in the SEVIS federal database via Terra Dotta (CPT, OPT, and STEM OPT Extensions)

Within the Knowlton Center, serve as the primary career coach for international students, including:

  • Provide individual and group advising toward career discernment, and help students navigate the process of applying for internship, employment, and graduate/ professional schools applications.
  • Advise students on topics such as: internship and job search strategies, graduate school opportunities, employment authorization and visa regulations, resume, CV, and cover letters, networking and interviewing, financial considerations, and cultural advice for global markets.
  • Design, implement, and publicize international student career programming and work collaboratively with faculty, other administrative offices, and student organizations to ensure that students are well-informed and competitive candidates for opportunities. Assist career center colleagues to identify and establish post-graduate opportunities for international students, both inside the U.S. and abroad, as well as conduct outreach to employer and graduate school recruiters.
  • Cultivate relationships with Denison alumni and current employers to develop potential opportunities for international students, e.g. visits to and participation in discussions with potential employers for students; conduct outreach to international alumni, assist in planning and organizing alumni panels, and promote the alumni mentorship program and alumni engagement more broadly.
  • Collect and evaluate data focusing on the entire four-year experience for international students while at Denison as well as post-Denison career pathways and outcomes.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in the areas of business, human resources, education, marketing, human development, or related field is required.

  • A minimum of three years of full-time professional experience working with college students in an international office, career center, academic advising office (or related office).
  • US citizenship or legal permanent residency required to serve as a DSO (Designated School Official) in the Center for Global Programs. Record of advising international students on immigration regulations to support students while at Denison and after students leave Denison (OPT, STEM OPT).
  • Ability to serve as a key immigration processor for OPT and CPT employment authorizations.
  • Aptitude to help develop institutional policies regarding immigration regulations.
  • Experience working with international students. Demonstrated commitment to cultural competence and understanding cultural considerations.
  • Experience with Terra Dotta/ISSS software.
  • Knowledge of F-1/J-1 student immigration regulations and SEVIS (Student & Exchange Visitor Information System).
  • Knowledge of global hiring trends, including issues and policies related to international work.
  • Experience with program development and implementation. Excellent administrative and organization skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Public speaking and/or workshop presentation experience.
  • Strong work ethic. Ability to take initiative, provide solutions, and perform in a deadline-driven environment. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Commitment to the mission of a liberal arts college.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Business, International Education, Counseling and Guidance, Higher Education, Human Resources, an academic discipline, or related field.

  • Fluency in Chinese (Mandarin) or Vietnamese.
  • Experience with advising on résumés, interviewing and job search strategies.
  • Experience in human resources, talent identification, or similar function.
