Position Summary
Reports directly to the Director of Admissions for the Juris Doctor (J.D.) Office of Admissions, one of the most highly selective law school admissions programs in the country, and works closely with colleagues throughout law school administration.
Responsibilities
- Primary responsibility is to serve the needs and to manage the experience of admitted students with the aim of increasing yield. Such efforts include:
a. Developing methods to research, analyze, and create reports on data and enrollment patterns of admitted applicants, including through surveys, focus groups, and LSAC (and Columbia) database reports;
b. Developing metrics for determining utility and/or success of processes or events;
c. Assisting in event planning for admitted student outreach functions and receptions
d. Managing involvement of current students in yield events, including selection, attendance, training, outreach through electronic and paper mail to admitted students;
e. Shared responsibility for developing and implementing strategy to increase yield through publications, mailings, events, and focus groups;
f. Creating and implementing strategic plan to connect members of community, i.e., students, administrators, and faculty with admitted students through the use of email, telephone calls, conferences, and webinars;
g. Co-directing and augmenting existing student ambassador program along with other affairs of current student liaison events, such as admitted student tours and student accommodations and
h. Developing, maintaining, and managing plan for visits of admitted students to our campus, including arranging meetings with students, faculty, and administrators, as well as devising a systematic follow-up strategy. This duty also extends to primary responsibility for care of admitted students during visits to campus; and
i. Creation of strategic plan and messaging for building connections with admitted students in order to boost post-admission recruiting effectiveness.
- Primary responsibility for targeted and other outreach to underrepresented minority prospects, students of color, and various multicultural, ethnic, and identity groups. Such efforts are to include:
a. Developing methods to research, analyze, and create reports on data and enrollment patterns of underrepresented minority prospects, students of color, and various multicultural, ethnic, and identity groups, including through surveys, focus groups, and LSAC (and Columbia) database reports;
b. Developing metrics for determining utility and/or success of processes or events;
c. Writing campaign via mail and email to various schools, student groups, and other pertinent populations
d. Management of events directed at multicultural populations during admitted student program
e. Fostering, maintaining, and enhancing relationships with various identity groups at the Law School
f. Developing methods of expanding pipeline of underrepresented minorities to law school generally and Columbia specifically
- Primary responsibility to manage the transition of all admitted students to matriculant status-transfers and incoming 1Ls-after the designated deposit period. Such tasks will include:
a. Serving as the designated contact within the Office of Admissions to assisting regular and transfer depositors with regard to housing, LawNet, financial aid, computer-based-training, immunizations, registration, EIP, and any other
matters of importance and concern to such pre-matriculants
b. Working with the relevant offices (Student Services, Financial Aid, Registration Services, IT, Health Services, Career Services, SJI, and others) to determine process for orienting respective categories of pre-matriculants in order to advise and assist such populations
c. Developing summary plan for orientation/transition process
d. Working with Student Services to provide robust and relevant information on Orientation and Transfer Student websites
- Attends national law fairs and forums.
- Interacts with prospective and actual applicants who visit, call, or correspond with the Office of Admissions. Must have a strong understanding of the Law School admissions process, as well as internal and external policies governing academic administration.
- Shared responsibility for reading, evaluating, interviewing, and rendering decisions on approximately 7,000 admission applications annually.
- Serve as liaison with LSAC and other law schools for decision/deposit overlap processes.
- Uses national law school applicant database system, primarily for generating and analyzing confidential reports.
- Establishes and maintains relationships with relevant University and Law School administrators and departments, as well as organizations connected with informing and recruiting underrepresented minorities.
- Fosters, maintains, and enhances relationships with various departments and faculty at the Law School and develops program that connects Office to the various departments and faculty at the Law School and University.
- Member of strategic planning team for Office of Admissions and undertakes special projects and responsibilities as assigned by Dean or Director of Admissions.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required, plus 4-6 years of relevant professional experience. Graduate degree preferred.
- Several years' experience in a professional environment characterized by complex demands, large workloads, deadline pressures and high client/student expectations, preferably in (but not limited to) admissions or student affairs.
- Computer literacy in spreadsheets and database software.
- Ability to work with culturally diverse constituencies.
- Driver License, evening and weekend work required.
