Domestic Study Away Program Coordinator
Position Summary
Domestic Study Away is facilitated through the Office for Education Abroad. The Domestic Study Away Program Coordinator assumes primary responsibility for administering and managing domestic study away programs offered through MSU colleges and other academic units. The Domestic Study Away Program Coordinator is also responsible for advising students in the identification of programs of personal and academic interest and managing processes related to the application process utilizing education abroad software.
Core Duties & Responsibilities (80%)
Domestic Study Away Liaison (15%)
- Serve in a liaison capacity to MSU academic colleges, campus administrative units, units within International Studies and Programs, and affiliated provider organizations regarding domestic study away
- Represent domestic study away on behalf of the Office for Education Abroad at Advisory Council for Education Abroad meetings, academic advisor meetings, and at related campus meetings, as needed.
Program Development & Management (40%)
- Work closely with faculty directors on budgets (set pricing suggestion for faculty-directed programs and develop budgets for partner programs), marketing materials, logistical and academic issues, etc.
- Create and maintain program information in ViaTRM (education abroad software)
- Approve and monitor external payments and invoices
- Identify potential provider organizations or external resources for domestic study away programs
- Maintain regular communication with on-site staff or provider organizations
- Collaborate with partner institutions
- Organize on-site logistics such as transportation, housing, classroom facilities, etc., for certain programs
- Host partner institution visitors and make site visits/program evaluations, as needed
- Provide assistance and support, as needed, with all student health, safety, security, and behavioral issues. Manage non-emergency program situations
- Actively pursue the development of new programs that enhance MSU's domestic study away program portfolio and that meet curriculum integration requirements
- Assist colleges, departments, and faculty in identifying program gaps and provide guidance on options for new program development
- Provide support to the "American Semester Program" as needed.
Student Advising & Support (25%)
- Provide comprehensive student advising and support with topics such as program selection, financial aid and scholarships, diversity abroad, etc
- Assist the MSU colleges in the development of college/unit-specific advising materials
- Assist the unit with implementing an effective promotion and outreach strategy for education abroad and domestic study away, with particular emphasis on targeting traditionally underrepresented populations. This may include, but is not limited to assisting with events such as the education abroad expo, regional/thematic promotional events, and program-specific information sessions.
Additional Functions (20%)
Functional Support (15%)
- Provide leadership and coordination of one or more critical focus areas/functions within the Office for Education Abroad (e.g., program evaluation, financial aid & scholarship advising and reporting, undergraduate research, etc.)
Professional Development (5%)
- Contribute to the profession of education abroad and domestic study away, which may include attending regional, national and international conferences each year as necessary/appropriate/fiscally feasible
- Contribute to the field of education abroad and domestic study away, which may include producing scholarly publications, conducting outcomes assessment research, etc.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in a related field; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work in an education abroad or domestic study away setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Desired Qualifications
Master's degree in a related field; experience living, working or studying abroad; demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills; and proficiency in a language other than English.
