Position SummaryInternational Affairs provides services that meet the diverse needs of the SDSU global community and offers programs which foster global perspectives and diplomacy, intercultural awareness and international goodwill. This unit serves as SDSU's central source of information and support services for faculty engagement, incoming students, outgoing students on study abroad programs, international risk management, and passport services. International Affairs works with all areas of the university to identify and meet the unique needs of its constituencies and to provide opportunities for all members of the campus community to develop effective skills and perspectives for global citizenship and leadership.The Global Education Advisor, supervised by the International Affairs/Global Education Office (GEO) Director, serves as a bridge between International Affairs and one or more of SDSU’s academic colleges. Working in close collaboration with the office lead, the Assistant Director of GEO, the Advisor will provide advising services to SDSU students on all global education program types and all phases of the advising process, from inquiry through reentry. In addition, this position is involved in marketing of global education opportunities and supports program review, risk management and incident response as needed. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.Education and ExperienceExperience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.Education: Equivalent to graduation with a bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in student affairs, counseling, higher education or internationally-related fieldWorking knowledge of issues related to international educational exchange and study abroad, including pre-departure orientation, risk management resources. Working knowledge of cultural factors impacting adjustment abroad or upon return home. Demonstrated skills in: public speaking; intercultural communications and cross-cultural relations; interpersonal communication skills, particularly related to advising students and interacting with faculty, administrative staff, and parents; planning, organizing, and designing and implementing study abroad marketing plans to meet specified goals. Strong skills in oral and written communications, critical thinking, problem solving, program planning, program evaluation and computer usage. Demonstrated ability to relate easily, effectively and equitably with students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Demonstrated ability to take direction as well as apply self-initiative..Second language fluency, particularly in Spanish is highly desired. Experience working in a study abroad office is highly desirable. Specialized Skills Required
Previous experience studying, living or working abroad.Compensation and BenefitsStarting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $ 4,304 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated. The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university’s secure online health portal prior to beginning work.
