Job Title: Immigration Coordinator

 

Department: Admissions

 

Reports To: Associate Director of Immigration / Director of International Admissions and Immigration

 

Status: Full-time, Non-exempt

 

 

 

SUMMARY

 

This position serves as one of the college’s immigration officers for new, current, and graduating(ed) students with the Department of Homeland Security for the F-1 student program and as the primary officer and RO with the Department of State for J-1 students.  It also provides support to the areas of international student needs, admissions, orientation, and study abroad.

 

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

 

 

  • Perform primary administrative duties related to Federal Government compliance issues for Calvin University and J-1 students application and immigration processes and support for F-1 processing such as: assist PDSO with the submission of the I-17, creating I-20 & DS-2019’s for both newly admitted, current, and graduating(ed) students, implementing procedures that maintain federal regulations for students and the college, support study abroad visas, mandatory reporting to SEVIS, involved in the financial review and verification process, and keeping current with changing federal regulations via conferences and manuals.

     

  • Effectively communicate with and support current students regarding immigration issues by conducting immigration workshops, provide advising and encouragement to current students and their families on issues related to challenges they face, develop/maintain advocacy relationships related to immigration issues.  

     

  • Work with faculty and staff to communicate and facilitate immigration regulations and when international students are in disciplinary action involving financial difficulties, academic problems, violations of school policy or the law.

     

  • Work with the Director of the Center for Intercultural Student Development and the international orientation program for incoming international students by participating in selected parent &/or student sessions.

     

  • Work with the Director of International Admissions and Associate Director of Immigration to coordinate processes for and communication with students from overseas who have been admitted such as: immigration letters, financial letters, deposit and visa information, e-mails and phone calls. Ensure individual attention and provide accurate information.

     

  • Support Calvin students and faculty applying for visas to study abroad. Provide instructions and advice on acquiring a student visa for Calvin’s overseas programs.

     

  • Oversee application and immigration processing for exchange programs. Develop streamlined application process for international exchange visitors coming to Calvin for short-term programs. Coordinate with various campus offices to ensure that exchange visitors are fully supported.

     

 

 

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

 

  • Partner with the Director of International Admissions and Immigration by reviewing admission files for completion; provide necessary credential review for applicants from international schools and work with the financial review committee to determine admission eligibility through an examination of student finances.

     

  • Other duties related to admissions as assigned.

     

 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 

 

Is responsible for occasional guidance and instruction for 1 to 3 student assistants.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

 

The position requires a Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent.  Requires one to three years of related experience (acting as an ARO or DSO) and the ability to use specialized equipment.

 

 

 

COMMUNICATION SKILLS 

 

This position requires the ability to explain college policies in difficult situations, write and edit reports or technical documents, coordinate and assess the work of others, and activities requiring significant communication skills. Handles confidential information.

 

 

 

COMPLEXITY

 

The position requires the ability to solve problems and to deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Instructions may be furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.  

 

 

 

ACCOUNTABILITY

 

The position has the authority, if approved, to take action or make recommendations that will affect procedures, processes, and practices involving customers or employees in other departments.

 

 

 

DECISION MAKING/JUDGMENT
