Director of Student Affairs

We are seeking a Director of Student Affairs who will report to the Associate Dean of Enrollment Management and Student

Affairs and supervises the Learning Collaborative Manager and two Senior Administrative Coordinators.

The Director of Student Affairs will oversee and manage student affairs initiatives, services, and resources for the School of Nursing. This includes disability services, new student orientation, tutoring services, student health insurance, student activities and organizations, nursing student pre-enrollment compliance, resolution of related grievances or complaints, and the consultation, evaluation and referral of students to a network of support services including JHSAP, University Health Services, SOURCE, and services in the Hopkins community and externally. This position will develop, implement, and market services that support the student experience at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. The Director will serve as an advocate for students within the School of Nursing and the larger Hopkins community.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Strategic Direction and Management
  • Determines the strategic direction, and maintains, develops and implements new programs and services that support or enhance the student academic experience at the School of Nursing in collaboration with academic affairs and the Associate Dean for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs.
  • Plan, implement and market initiatives and events for students. Manages the day-to-day operations of the Student Affairs Office including all matters related to student services, disability services, compliance, and student activities.
  • Provides leadership, coaching, counseling and mentoring for Student Affairs staff; including responsibility for hiring, conducting performance reviews, and providing ongoing performance feedback.
  • Represents School of Nursing as the student affairs representative on a number of school-wide project teams and university-wide committees (i.e. JHU Student Crisis Committee (CARE Team), SON Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee).
  • Oversees budget management including participating in development of budgets, reporting, and monitoring for all units, Student Affairs, Student Clubs and Organizations, the Learning Collaborative and Disability Services.

Student Affairs
  • Oversees Disability Services for School of Nursing students in coordination with the university Office of Disability Services.
  • Organizes, both online and in-person, new student orientations in fall, spring and summer in coordination with program directors and staff. Oversees logistics and communications to students.
  • Oversees the Learning Collaborative (tutoring services) manager, process and procedures.
  • Advises student organization leaders and the Nursing Student Senate on club activities, event management, marketing and assists students interested in creating new student organizations.
  • Collaborates with faculty, academic advisers and staff to identify students in need and provide services and resources to allow them to be successful.
  • Serves as intake officer for student complaints, gathers information from appropriate resources, investigates issues, makes recommendations and takes action, across various levels of the organization, to resolve a diversity of problems, issues, and complaints.
  • Oversees the university Student Health Insurance plan communications, website, and enrollment and waiver process.
  • Communicates with students, staff, and faculty on a regular basis through listservs, pre-matriculation emails, and through weekly Student E-News
  • Determines student needs in partnership with SON leadership. Evaluates student needs through focus groups, annual student satisfaction surveys, and programming surveys to develop responsive programs.
  • Represents SON Student Affairs at numerous admissions and program events annually.

Events Management
  • Leads planning, make key decisions, and provides oversight for the logistics for new student orientation, the White Coat ceremony and other student or school related events.

Marketing
  • Provides guidance and insight on content and message for the development of marketing pieces regarding student events and resources, in partnership with the SON Office of Marketing and Communications. Works with MarCom on orientation and special event marketing and programs.

  • Knowledge and skill in student affairs administration

  • Strong verbal communication skills, including solid public speaking
  • Strong written communication skills, including ability to draft original correspondence, reports, and procedures
  • Ability to resolve disputes and complaints through mediation
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations concerning student affairs and disability services areas
  • Strong supervisory skills
  • Knowledge of budget development and management
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks or priorities at one time
  • General knowledge of effective marketing
  • Sound technical skills including ability to work with data bases, conduct internet research and work with Microsoft Office Suite products

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree
  • Five years related experience, with prior supervisory experience required
  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula

30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
