Qualifications:

A. Educational Background: Bachelors degree required. Masters degree preferred.

B. Experience, Skills, Knowledge:
  • A minimum of one year experience required in college admissions counseling, college academic support, or a counseling setting with a focus on providing assistance to college bound students.
  • Some experience in one or both of the following admissions counseling areas preferred:
  • International student admissions and knowledge of SEVIS and USCIS (United States Citizenship & Immigration Services).
  • Selective admissions programs in health care fields (e.g. nursing).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, with preferred experience at using student information systems (e.g. Ellucian Colleague, WebAdvisor, and OnBase).
  • Experience leveraging CRM systems with recruitment, Slate Technolutions preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills required including effective sales management and customer relations skills, public speaking, listening skills, and excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Strong organization skills with the ability to pay attention to detail, to use effective time and task management techniques, and to multi-task in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to embrace a flexible work schedule with evening and weekend work hours required to cover recruitment activities, extended office hours, and other admissions initiatives. Overnight travel will be required.
  • Valid, clean and current NY State drivers license required.

Essential Functions:

The Admission Counselor is an ambassador for FLCC, serving as a primary contact for prospective students and their families and as an expert in the delivery of enrollment services. The person in this position must promote FLCC to prospective students and family members and guide applicants through the steps to enrollment. As an ambassador, his/her functions will include the ability to:

Serve as an energetic, upbeat representative for Finger Lakes Community College at college fairs, high school visits, and in a variety of other on- and off- campus recruitment and community events. To serve in this role, s/he must maintain a broad knowledge base about all facets of FLCC to effectively communicate the benefits and features of our academic programs, facilities (main campus and campus centers), online course options, support services, athletics, student life, housing opportunities, and basic financial aid information. Frequently, s/he will be asked to serve as a public speaker, a panelist at area high school and community programs, and to talk one-on-one with prospective students and parents about FLCC and related topics (e.g. admission to college in general, the community college experience, and the freshmen experience).

Have an understanding of college information in the following areas and be able to articulate and advice prospective students and their family members accordingly: college policies and procedures; admissions policies and procedures; and steps involved in the enrollment process. Enrollment steps include acceptance, placement testing, FAFSA completion, academic advisement, immunization requirements, transfer credit evaluations, registration/orientation, payment of tuition, transfer articulation agreements, housing options, and the use of WebAdvisor and the college website).

Develop expertise in advising prospective students and applicants regarding admission to FLCCs selective admissions programs (e.g. Nursing, , EMT-Paramedic). Assist in the coordination and implementation of applicant review and selection processes for these programs. This requires the ability to maintain a thorough knowledge of selective admissions standards for each program and to effectively articulate this information to applicants.

Develop and maintain expertise in the international admissions process to support the office in assisting international students seeking to enroll at FLCC. The person in this role will serve on the admissions team as a Designated School Official (DSO). This will require that s/he understand FLCC international admissions policies as well as USCIS, Homeland Security, and other regulations governing F-1 students. S/he will be asked to assist in all aspects of the process including SEVIS reporting and preparation of I-20 forms. An understanding of admissions and enrollment policies governing undocumented students and international visitors with other visa classifications is also required.

Maintain a thorough knowledge of all other FLCC offerings in order to effectively refer students to the services they are seeking (e.g. Professional Development and Community Education courses, Gemini courses, TASC exam preparation courses, non-matriculated student status, and ESL offerings).

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of state and federal regulations pertaining to admissions practices, as well as NACAC (National Association of College Admissions Counselors) Statement of Principles of Good Practice for admission professionals. Areas of knowledge include: FERPA regulations, federal and state financial aid processes, NYSED and federal regulations governing the admissions of applicants including, but not limited to, policies related to ex-offenders, non-US citizen, Ability to Benefit guidelines for non-high school graduates, applicants with foreign high school transcripts, applicants graduating from unaccredited high schools, and homeschooled applicants.

???????Other functions essential to the position include assisting with day-to-day admissions counselor duties within the office, which include:
  • Responding to in-person, e-mail, and phone inquiries, as well as taking an active role and assisting in coordination of social media and online chat efforts of the Admissions Office targeting prospective students.
  • Review and interpret all aspects of high school transcripts and test scores to insure that applicants have met high school graduation requirements; proficiency at navigating and inputting data into applicant and prospective student files within the Colleague database and OnBase document imaging software.
  • Playing an integral role as event planner and/or presenter at various admissions and enrollment service events geared for recruitment of new students (e.g. Admissions Open Houses, SUNY Financial Aid Day, Admission Information Meetings, and Academic Preview events).
  • Assisting to cover Admissions Office front desk or phone line or with data entry projects involving prospect and applicant information on occasion (as needed).
  • Manage a territory based recruitment caseload, which includes travel and proactive outreach (phone and email) to inquiries and applicants.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development activities offered by SUNYCAP (State University of New York College Admissions Professionals), NAFSA Association of International Educators, other professional organizations, or sponsored by the college to promote personal/professional growth.
  • Assist the Director in providing direction and training to support staff and student aides/ tour guides in order to accomplish individual goals and maintain effective operations within the office.
  • Assist the Director by taking on additional assignments as need (e.g. liaison with the Educational Planning and Career Services Office to assist in promoting transfer articulation opportunities to newly enrolling students, assist in the coordination of recruitment travel schedule, and other duties as assigned by the Director of Admissions).
