POSITION DETAILS

The State University of New York, Brooklyn Educational Opportunity Center, provides tuition free academic and workforce development training to eligible New York State residents, providing a pathway to lifelong learning, college access and economic self-sufficiency.

Reporting to the Director of Student Services and located in the Advisement Center, the Student Advisor advises students and assists them in completing their program of study successfully.

DUTIES

The duties of the position include but are not limited to the following:
  • Provide academic and career advisement to students enrolled in developmental or career programs.
  • Assist students with developing life skills and setting goals, and discuss educational and career options.
  • Meet with applicants in individual or group settings to ensure familiarity with program requirements and EOC policies and procedures.
  • Assist with coordinating and conducting orientations and workshops for new and continuing students.
  • Monitor and evaluate student progress for early intervention.
  • Provide effective and timely referrals to internal and external support services.
  • Assist in creating student success strategies to aid retention and completion.
  • Establish and maintain student files, databases and records.
  • Prepare activity reports and analyses.
  • Provide follow-up services.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Flexible schedule is required: day, evening and weekend hours may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Direct experience in advising non- traditional students and those with academic deficits and life challenges is highly desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
  • Customer service orientation is essential, being able to work effectively with faculty, staff, students and external constituents.
  • Proficiency in MS Office is strongly preferred; experience with academic or career advising software a plus.

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.

$43,540 - $50,765
