The Division of Academic Affairs at Towson University (TU) is seeking a passionate and collaborative individual to serve as the Associate Director for the International Student and Scholar Office. The Associate Director serves as the senior international student advisor and is the lead staff member on F-1 regulations and policy and the point person on F1/F2 immigration-related issues. Responsibilities and Duties:

As a member of the International Student and Scholar Office (ISSO) team, the Associate Director provides office leadership in analysis of F-1 visa regulations and F-1 status-related policies. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Coordinate all written (print and electronic) government regulation-related informational materials targeted for the F-1 student population
  • Advise international students on immigration, academic, financial, personal, cultural adjustment, and cross-cultural communication matters
  • Ensure compliance with regulations of the Department of Homeland Security regarding monitoring and reporting information on the international student population at TU
  • Work with other ISSO staff members and other university offices to ensure a campus environment that facilitates international student success
  • Directly supervise the ISSO Administrative Assistant, to include facilitating proper training and overseeing maintenance of the unit's administrative functions; ensuring proper and timely issuance of immigration documents (Form I-20) after student admission and review of financial and other immigration documents; and identifying appropriate professional development opportunities for the Administrative Assistant to guide and enhance performance.

In the absence of the ISSO Director, the Associate Director provides staff leadership and office management in coordination with the Assistant Vice President for International Initiatives and assists with policy decisions as appropriate to the length or nature of the Director’s absence.  This position also supports the Director with visa services for faculty, research scholars, and other non-students providing backup to immigration work for B1, B2, WTV, J1, J2, H1, H4, and TN nonimmigrant classifications, and serves as a resource for I-9s.  

Successful candidates will...

  • Have a Master's degree
  • Have five years of experience working with international students and/or scholars
  • Have knowledge of immigration regulations and current trends within the international education field
  • Possess excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills and be interested in and attentive to cross-cultural communication
  • Possess excellent administrative and multi-tasking skills and be highly organized, self-motivated, and detail-oriented.
  • Be able to work as an effective team member
  • Be eligible to become a DHS Designated School Official and DOS Alternate Responsible Officer - U.S. permanent resident or citizen status required.  

Preferred qualifications:

  • Previous work experience in an international student office at a higher education institution
  • Experience with SEVIS and web-based management systems (e.g. Terra Dotta)
  • Ability to speak a foreign language fluently
