*CONTEXT OF THE JOB:*
Student Services for Athletes (SSA) promotes student-athletes’ success by offering a broad array of services that assist with their academic and personal adjustment to the University of Delaware. The program provides critical student services including counseling/advising, tutoring, and academic assistance to student-athletes. As a part of the Student-Athlete Success Team, SSA also helps to integrate the academic and social experiences of student athletes and fosters their academic, career, and personal development. In addition, as a member of the Division of Student Life, SSA embraces the mission and values of the division and works closely with the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Services in upholding and embracing their departmental mission of “Inspiring Greatness Together.”
Under the general direction of the Director, Student Services for Athletes, and the direct supervision of the Associate Director, the Assistant Director will oversee the academic advising and academic support for student-athletes; provide individual academic assistance and counseling to those student-athletes; consult with coaches, faculty, administrators and parents; assist coaches in recruiting student-athletes; and provide leadership for other activities which occur within the program as assigned. This position will also likely travel with an assigned team as well.

*MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: *
● Provides oversight of the academic performance of all assigned student-athletes.
● Supervises Academic Advisors, Interns, and/or Graduate Assistants that have a caseload working with student-athletes
● Assists in the supervision of the academic space within the Whitney Athletic Center, specifically regarding study hall requirements and tutoring for assigned student-athletes.
● Assists student-athletes with their academics including individual academic meetings, academic monitoring, academic advising/counseling, and coordination of tutors.
● Assists the Director with strategic planning for Student Services for Athletes.
● Works closely with the Learning Specialist in formulating academic success plans for academically at-risk student-athletes.
● Provides educational, developmental, and career counseling to student-athletes.
● Reviews and monitors academic progress and eligibility of student-athletes.
● Coordinates the supervision and reporting of study hall hours to coaches.
● Assists assigned programs with recruiting prospective student-athletes, including participating in one-on-one meetings and group presentations.
● Serves as a liaison with various other departments on campus and specific academic departments and colleges.
● Attends all meetings and serves on various committees within both the Division of Student Life and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation as assigned.
● Travels with assigned team(s) as needed.
● Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

*QUALIFICATIONS: *
● Master’s degree in counseling, student personnel administration, education or related discipline
● Minimum of four years counseling/advisement experience with students, preferably with student-athletes
● Strong leadership skills. Demonstrated decision-making skills and judgment.
● Experience working with a diverse population; demonstrated professionalism and cultural competence with awareness of and sensitivity to racial, cultural, religious, socio-economic, gender and sexual orientation diversity.
● Ability to think strategically with the mindset that aligns with the values of the Division of Student Life and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics
● Advanced knowledge and understanding of student academic advisement, development, and retention issues, trends, and programs.
● Advanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.
● Advanced working knowledge of academic recruitment and advisement policies, procedures, systems, regulations, and standards at the university level.
● Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
● Knowledge of current and emerging developments and trends within area of expertise.
● Knowledge of Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guidelines and regulations.
● Ability to work evening and weekend hours if necessary, and occasionally travel.
● Demonstrated understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.
