Job Summary
Under the direction of the Director of Study Abroad and Away, the Study Abroad Program Specialist will develop, implement, and evaluate globally focused programs in both credit and noncredit offerings. The incumbent will collaborate with faculty, departments, colleges, and international partners/organizations to develop and sustain an array of high quality, high-impact study abroad and study away learning opportunities that meet the educational needs and goals of the SJSU's diverse student population. The Study Abroad Program Specialist will contribute to strategic planning, implementation and improvement of processes, student support and services, evaluation of programmatic goals, and development of recommendations for new programs and sustaining/growing existing ones.
The incumbent implements and monitors globally focused programs that take place locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. The Program Specialist has a role in supporting instructors to achieve program goals as well as supporting students' success in Study Away/Abroad courses and programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer and coordinate the development of SAA programs such as Faculty Led Programs, SummerSchool Abroad (SSA) Programs, U.S. Culture Programs, etc
- Collaborate with appropriate academic units, community groups, international institutions, study abroad providers and vendors to support new and existing programs offered through SAA
- Identify new sites and implement improvements for existing SAA programs as needed.
- Market and promote SJSU programs through information sessions, classroom visits, study abroad fairs, and promotional activities
- Develop and manage FLP and SSA program budgets and provide reports for the Director and other department stakeholders
- Work with course/program stakeholders to gather and document requirements, create and format forms and related paperwork
- Recruit, select, and prepare students for off-campus domestic and abroad experiences by working with campus partners and stakeholders
- Support the development of faculty proposals with a special emphasis on site locations, itinerary, enrollment management, budget and fiscal responsibility
- Contribute to and maintain a SAA employee handbook/operations manuals of all Standard Operating Procedures within the SAA
- Monitor and respond to incident reports through the non-emergency reporting channels
- Identify and coordinate program logistics for domestic and international SAA mobility programs
- Develop and manage FLP and SSA program budgets and provide reports for the Director and other department stakeholders
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of conducting or overseeing market research related to study away/abroad opportunities for developing or growing program offerings
- Must be solutions oriented with excellent problem-solving skills and be able to think quickly and adeptly about how to address problems and adjust plans to meet changing factors
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, in order to communicate effectively ideas, status, and issues to various stakeholders within the College, University, and broader community
- Knowledge of best practices in risk management in international education programs
- Knowledge of U.S. and international higher education systems, policies, and laws relating to international educational programming and partnerships, including federal and state laws, University rules regulations concerning study abroad programs including but not limited to FERPA, Title IX, Clery, etc.
- Possess excellent customer service and public relations skills
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed by CPGE
Required Qualifications
- Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university, preferably with courses in adult education and curriculum planning
- Equivalent to two years of experience in planning classes or programs in a specialized field or area, preferably in higher, extended, or adult education. Experience developing resources, budgets, and marketing plans for educational programs and in acting as a liaison with the community is desirable. Teaching experience in higher or extended education may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate degree in International Education or related area
- A minimum of two and a half years of experience in international education organizing, scheduling, managing budgets and planning tasks for program delivery and assessment
- Experience advising college students, preferably about study abroad
- Two years of direct experience working in a study abroad office with faculty-led programming
- Experience studying or working abroad
Compensation
Classification: Extended Education Specialist I
Anticipated Hiring Range: up to $5,000/month
CSU Salary Range: $4,493/month - $6,395/month
