Associate Director, Education Abroad Services

Position Summary:  Reporting to the Senior Director, Education Abroad and Volunteer Engagement, the associate director provides thought partnership and support to develop and deliver programs, products, and services for the education abroad community. They are a strategic staff partner to education abroad volunteer leader communities within the NAFSA volunteer structure. The associate director leads NAFSA’s efforts to provide guidance on regulatory and compliance issues affecting education abroad.   The position also leads effective outreach strategies to promote and disseminate information NAFSA programs, products, and services to strengthen awareness within the education abroad community.


Major Functions and Responsibilities:


Provide support and thought partnership to develop and deliver programs, products, and services for the education abroad community. (30%)

  • Ensure that NAFSA’s products, programs, and services fill existing gaps to professionalize the field
  • Track trends in Education Abroad and inform NAFSA leadership of timely updates, challenges and opportunities
  • Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and subject matter experts to anticipate and respond to members’ professional development needs
  • Develop online and in-person events, web resources, conference sessions, digital downloads, and books, in collaboration with subject matter experts as needed, that address challenges and issues in education abroad


Serve as the staff partner to volunteers on the Education Abroad Knowledge Community (EAKC) and the Education Abroad Regulatory Practice Committee (EARP) and their subcommittees. (25%)


  • Foster collaboration and engagement between leaders and NAFSA staff
  • Offer strategic focus, operational tools, and technology guidance to volunteer leaders to ensure effective action is taken to achieve the timely deliverables and outcomes as outlined in their annual work plans
  • Advise on meeting agenda and attend leader meetings
  • Onboard new leaders to their roles. Facilitate networking and relationship-building
  • Provide information, direction and guidance each year for the preparation of planning documents and work with the chair-elect/designate to annual work plans for presentation to the vice presidents



Lead NAFSA’s efforts to provide up-to-date guidance on regulatory practice affecting education abroad. (20%)

  • Serve as primary staff liaison to U.S. federal agencies, working with colleagues in other NAFSA departments, such as Public Policy Help position NAFSA as a leader in guidance on regulatory issues for education abroad Disseminate up-to-date information on federal regulations affecting study abroad as the result of changes in policy from the U.S. Departments of Education, State, Treasury, and other agencies Advise on consular issues affecting study abroad visas for U.S. students and recommend liaison work as appropriate Ensure that annual conference includes regulatory content for education abroad, recruiting government representatives as needed



Disseminate information about NAFSA’s education abroad offerings through effective outreach strategies. (10%)


  • Use NAFSA platforms to highlight new resources, products, services, and publications supporting EA professionals. Liaise with the Marketing unit on strategy and promotional materials for EAS special projects (e.g. Strategic Retreat, joint seminars with other associations) Ensure that events, resources, and announcements are included in NAFSA outreach efforts, such as and promoted via Network.NAFSA communities Coordinate with Public Policy staff regarding links between EAS work and study abroad public policy content Moderate the EAKC Network on Network.NAFSA



Manage special programs and events related to Education Abroad. (10%)


  • Support the senior director in the planning and execution of education abroad events, including marketing, budgeting, customer service, and event logistics



Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Director. (5%)


  • Serve as staff liaison the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) to promote intra-campus collaboration and reflects good practices agreed upon by the profession-at-large through the CAS Standards Collaborate on cross-divisional projects as assigned



Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum three (3) years of work experience in a related field
  • Knowledge of and experience in the education abroad field
  • Experience with project management
  • Experience coordinating volunteer groups or components
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, take initiative, set priorities, and exercise sound judgment in a complex, fast-moving environment
  • A track record of excellent customer relations support using a variety of communication mediums and platforms
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite products
  • Ability to master various technology, web, and data management systems, including databases
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, including web-based applications and presentation delivery


Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a related field
  • Knowledge of federal regulatory issues affecting education abroad
  • Previous experience with NAFSA, international education, or other association membership, or nonprofit organization
  • Exposure to or experience in volunteer engagement and activities


Scope of Supervision

The position does not have supervisory responsibilities.


Work Relationships

As representatives of a membership organization with a broad and diverse range of activities related to education and training, NAFSA staff possess more than simply specialized capabilities. Each individual is expected to take the initiative to become knowledgeable about the organization as a whole. Association members and other staff expect colleagues to be accessible and responsive, to convey a positive attitude, and to exhibit a high degree of professionalism.


Office Environment

The workday is generally 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The week after Memorial Day to Labor Day, it is 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday.


Travel is required occasionally related to job responsibilities, especially for the annual conference, regional meetings, and other leadership meetings. Participation in the NAFSA annual conference the week of Memorial Day, including the holiday itself, is a job requirement. The annual conference is held in varying cities.
