Job Description Summary
The Director of the Chemistry Learning Center is responsible for recruiting, hiring, scheduling, training and supervising a diverse staff of undergraduate coaches (tutors) and Supplemental instruction Leaders for the purpose of increased retention and success of students in the first- and second-year chemistry courses at the University, particularly in transitioning from high school to college. Additionally, this position assists with various administrative aspects relating to large lectures as well as being the primary academic advisor for undergraduate students in the Department of Chemistry.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)
- Oversee the recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling and supervising of
undergraduate coaches (tutors), and Supplemental Instruction Leaders.
- Design and plan effective tutor training sessions on an ongoing basis
- Provide services & resources for students enrolled in first- and second-year chemistry courses including weekly individual appointments and study groups as well as walk-in hours.
- Meet with students individually to assist with placement concerns, study
strategies, test anxiety and referring to other university resources as needed.
- Maintain statistical records of Chemistry Learning Center usage and student
success rates
- Oversee the Chemistry Learning Center budget, maintain budget projection
models and budget projections.
- Work flexible or irregular hours at certain times
- Member of the Michigan Tech Learning Centers Council.
- Maintain content of the Chemistry Learning Center web site and promote
interests of the Chemistry Learning Center.
- Assist with organizational aspects of administering examinations, and grading,
for first year lecture courses.
- Contact person for incoming students, parents and other advisors and
departments on campus.
- Primary academic advisor for majors, minors and transfers in the Chemistry
Department. Assist students concerning degree requirements and progress toward
the degree as well as any issues that arise concerning coursework, waivers, degree
audits, etc.
- Coordinate activities for prospective students interested in Chemistry majors.
This includes organizing tours of the department and meeting faculty and current
students for daily tours and large-scale recruitment events such as Open House and
Preview Day.
- Assist with departmental outreach in terms of fostering connections with
industry, area K-12 schools. Coordinate visits of local chemistry classes to the department for
hands-on lab explorations, visiting chemistry lectures, meeting current students and
faculty, touring the campus, etc.
- Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying
them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement
initiatives.
- Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
- Other department duties as assigned
Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)
• Bachelor's degree in chemistry or related field, education or communication.
Required Experience (minimum requirements)
• Demonstrated experience supervising student personnel
• Demonstrated understanding of learning strategies, study skills, interactive learning or other aspects relating to student success and retention
Desirable Education and/or Experience
• Knowledge and interest in education and educational psychology.
• Knowledge of learning disabilities
• Prior experience managing a tutoring center
• Experience in developing training programs
• Knowledge of Supplemental Instruction

• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and
