The International Services Counselor is responsible for facilitating/maintaining compliance records for enrolled international students. The incumbent would be responsible for advising new and current international students about immigration regulations and work with Academic Advisors and the Registrar’s office to make sure students are compliant on their academic standing to maintain their immigration records as well as approving internal compliance forms. The position works with advising, evaluating, and processing incoming international student applications when needed as well as advising current international students on Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT).

The incumbent will facilitate co-curricular multicultural programming that raises awareness of global issues by intentionally connecting students, faculty, and staff from diverse cultural backgrounds.

This position will also serve as the Designated School Official (DSO) through the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). The applicant must have U.S. citizenship or permanent residency status.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a DSO (Designated School Official) for Indiana Tech
  • Advise and assist new and current international students to maintain their F1 immigration status
  • Process undergraduate and graduate student applications, conduct credential evaluation and GPA calculations, and issue Acceptance/Denial decisions along with their I-20’s
  • Promptly and courteously, respond to phone calls, emails and other requests from students
  • Process immigration documents by following Homeland Security Regulations
  • Direct and assist international students with the connection to appropriate campus offices
  • Monitor, report, and submit required information and documentation to federal governmental agencies via SEVIS for currently enrolled international students (Day, CPS, Undergrad, & Grad)
  • Provide assistance to the Career Center with Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT) advising when needed by filing paperwork for international students in SEVIS system and counseling students on the process and requirements
  • Develop co-curricular multicultural programming events on campus that raise awareness of global issues and celebrates cultural diversity
  • Collaborate and work with the International Admissions team on the development and implementation of orientation programs for new international students arriving to Indiana Tech each semester
  • Partner with Student Life staff and organizations in developing co-curricular multicultural awareness programming
  • Represent the International Admissions office during campus visit days and New Student Orientation
  • Stay up to date on current research and trends related to international student services
  • Advocate for students from diverse cultural backgrounds on matters related to their academic success and social development
  • Be available to positively represent the University and the International Admissions office at various conferences and events on and off campus
  • Develop relationships in the community to support international students and/or to promote cultural understanding
  • Maintain a professional image and manner consistent with the University's mission, vision, and core values
  • Serve on University committees as assigned
  • Complete other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Must have a general understanding of international education systems
  • Strong communication skills, creativity, the ability to work in a results-oriented group, strong interpersonal skills, in-depth understanding of diverse cultures, and the ability to learn independently
  • Basic knowledge of the F-1 student visa processing
  • Minimum of one year of experience with SEVIS as a DSO in international admissions or an international programs office
  • Must have U.S. citizenship or Legal Permanent Residency as per U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) guidelines for DSO and ARO.
  • Must be interested in building a rapport with prospective and current international student populations at the university.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the needs and concerns of a diverse international population and respect for different cultures.
  • Must be insurable for driving company vehicles

Working Conditions

Work is primarily conducted in an office, Monday through Friday, 8:30 am 5 pm. Evening and weekend hours may be required to assist with workload or recruiting events. Limited travel may be required.
