The Office of the Dean of the Graduate School seeks an Associate Dean for Student Affairs. Reporting directly to the dean, the Associate Dean for Student Affairs is the senior administrator in the Office of the Dean of the Graduate School who oversees all aspects of student affairs for all 43 graduate programs across the University, providing vision, direction, and coordination for all Graduate School student life programs, initiatives and policies that support the educational mission of the institution. Areas of responsibility include policy development and operational oversight of the following: co-curricular events and programs, residential life, graduate student organizations and the Graduate Student Government, community building programs, community standards and discipline, crisis management, and emergency response. Oversees and organizes Graduate School Orientation as well as Hooding and Recognition Ceremony and serves as primary Graduate School representative to cabinet-level administrators and their senior staff for all student services/campus life offices that serve the graduate population (Vice President for Campus Life, University Services, University Health Services, Public Safety). Leads the on-call crisis management system for emergencies involving all graduate students and represents the Graduate School on response to emergencies and crises impacting the University community and/or the graduate student body. The Associate Dean for Student Affairs responds to emerging issues in the graduate student and University community as needs evolve.

The Associate Dean for Student Affairs supervises a staff of five and serves on the Graduate School’s senior leadership team.

Crisis Response and Emergency Management:
  • Leads the 24-hour on-call crisis management system for all medical, psychological and other emergencies involving graduate students and serves as the incident responder for the Graduate School on emergencies and crises impacting the University community and/or the graduate student body. Serves as a sole representative for the Graduate School as a key stakeholder when critical decisions need to be made/implemented in emergent situations.
  • Serves as the office’s primary lead on all crisis- and incident-related communications working directly with senior staff in Communications.
  • Provides counseling to students and advice to DGSs, other faculty members, and GPAs on a wide range of urgent student issues.
  • Works proactively to assist students experiencing personal difficulties and makes appropriate referrals and/or requests for administrative consultations. Facilitates Leaves of Absence in cooperation with deans of Academic Affairs.


  • Discipline and Community Standards:
  • Leads the non-academic disciplinary process for the Graduate School and modifies related policies and/or creates new policies and procedures as needed.
  • Plays a key-role in adjudicating Title IX infractions involving graduate students, in partnership with the Title IX coordinator and administers related trainings for grad students.
  • Responsible for planning, implementing, monitoring and enforcing compliance with critical health and safety measures impacting the University and the community.
  • Applies, interprets and upholds institutional policies; mediates grievances, receives complaints and helps find resolution to student concerns.
  • Evaluates programs and services; promotes sound risk management policies and procedures; ensures compliance with federal and state laws, in partnership with campus partners.


  • Community Building, Events, and Programmatic Initiatives:
  • Develops strategic plans to help foster a sense of community amongst graduate students through intellectual, cultural, and social programming.
  • Works closely with the Graduate Student Government and ensures that graduate student input is incorporated in key University matters.
  • Addresses residential, dining and apartment life matters and develops/reviews related policies/procedures in very close partnership with HRES/ University Services.
  • Develops and oversees policies and procedures for graduate student organizations and is responsible for overseeing all graduate student-led events.
  • Oversees the Orientation program to integrate graduate students to the community and the Hooding and Recognition Ceremony and other commencement-related events to celebrate the accomplishments of advanced degree recipients.


  • Management and Leadership:
  • Provides strategic direction for the Student Affairs team and leads a team of 2 assistant deans, an assistant director of residential life and student affairs, a student life coordinator and the Graduate College office coordinator.
  • Participates in the overall planning and management of Graduate School business and processes, as part of the Graduate School senior leadership team.
  • Develops strategic plans for the Graduate School to ensure that we are responding to the evolving needs of the graduate student body and the University more broadly.
  • Develops new policies as needs emerge and oversees updates and enhancements to related policies, services and trainings.
  • Serves as the sole representative for the Graduate School on a variety of University-wide committees, representing the best interests of the Graduate School and the University overall.
  • Financial oversight and accounting for Student Affairs and Events budgets.

    • Advanced degree and 7+ years of relevant work experience;
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including ability to lead meetings with, students, faculty, and senior administrators;
    • Excellent judgement and ability to quickly analyze situations to make complex decisions;
    • Ability to manage staff at several levels and work collaboratively with faculty, deans, and senior staff;
    • Demonstrated experience advising students, faculty, and senior administrators on confidential and emergent matters. Discretion and independent judgment needed to handle confidential information, documents and communication;
    • Experience adjudicating disciplinary matters and upholding community standards, including matters related to Title IX;
    • Highly motivated, flexible, adaptable and service-oriented, with strong collaborative skills for team work and consensus building. Demonstrated care and concern for student success and well-being;
    • Ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse constituencies both inside and outside the University;
    • Must be able to collaborate effectively in maintaining and growing relationships with campus partners to provide graduate student services.


    Additional Preferred Qualifications
    • Familiarity with and/or work experience within graduate education (especially Ph.D. programs) and in graduate student affairs in particular.
