Job Details

Virginia Tech is seeking two International Student Advisors to be part of the international student services team in the Cranwell International Center, providing immigration and support services to more than 4,000 international students from more than 100 countries.

This position reports to the Associate Director for International Student Services and works to ensure the university's compliance with federal regulations governing the enrollment of international students while managing a portfolio of immigration casework and advising international students, functioning as a Designated School Official (DSO), certified by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), utilizing the DHS Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), and requiring specialized knowledge and expertise for the interpretation and application of complex federal regulations and academic policies and procedures.

IMMIGRATION CASEWORK AND ADVISING (90%)
Ensures the university's compliance with federal regulations governing the enrollment of international students and exchange visitors while managing a portfolio of immigration casework and advising international students, functioning as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), certified by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the US Department of State (DOS) respectively, utilizing the DHS Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), and requiring specialized knowledge and expertise for the interpretation and application of complex federal regulations and academic policies and procedures. | Makes informed and independent decisions about eligibility for immigration benefits. | Serves as department liaison to an assigned portfolio of colleges, schools, and departments, as well as other administrative units on campus. | Advises international students regarding a wide range of academic, administrative, and immigration issues. | Provides support to international students regarding a wide range of cultural and social adjustment issues. | Contributes to the articulation of departmental immigration policies and procedures. | Liaises with state and federal agencies such as the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), US Department of State (DOS), Social Security Administration (SSA), and the Department of Motor Vehicles. 

SPECIAL PROJECTS (10%)
Lead and/or assist special projects, as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree | Demonstrated experience interpreting and applying federal immigration laws and regulations | Demonstrated experience exercising discretion and independent judgment in making informed decisions in complex situations | Demonstrated experience working with complex organizational processes and procedures | Demonstrated aptitude for learning, interpreting, and disseminating highly technical information, regulations, and procedures | Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail | Demonstrated strong interpersonal communications skills | Experience working with diverse populations within an intercultural context | Demonstrated ability to plan and deliver professional presentations | Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team | Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure and balance competing priorities | Demonstrated proficiency using the US Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) | Eligibility for certification by DHS as a Designated School Official (DSO) – must be US citizen or US lawful permanent resident

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated experience with Banner or other Student Information System | Demonstrated experience with Sunapsis or other university immigration management software | Working knowledge of Virginia Tech policies and procedures | Fluency in a foreign language| Experience living or studying abroad
