Description
The Director of Exceptional Student Services (ESS) is responsible for promoting the vision and programming of the ESS department to meet the needs of all diverse learners by setting and achieving goals that work toward improved academic results and meaningful and rigorous outcomes in a French immersion setting. The ESS department includes Special Education, Response to Intervention, Section 504 and ESL. The Director coaches, trains and empowers Coordinators of ESS to lead the teams of teachers and service providers at their respective campuses to work toward the vision. The Director serves as an Academic Leadership team member to ensure seamless implementation of ESS programming across the school. The Director is responsible for developing and overseeing all special education services, including coordinating multidisciplinary evaluations, monitoring implementation of special education services, as per students’ individualized education plans (IEPs), and ensuring compliance with federal and state laws. The Director is also responsible for monitoring the tiered intervention process (RTI) and ensuring compliance with Section 504 plans and accommodations.

Role and Responsibilities

The duties of the Director of Exceptional Student Services (ESS) include, but are not limited to the following tasks:

Leadership & Overall Support:
  • Lead the ESS department by communicating and advancing the vision and strategy for ESS programming in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Coach and develop ESS Coordinators.
  • Provide ESS Coordination for select grade levels.
  • Evaluate the ESS program and implement changes as needed.
  • Collaborate and build relationships with relevant stakeholders including families, school board, external partners.
  • Maintain open lines of communication and respond to concerns of parents, teachers, and administrators.
  • Plan and implement professional development for staff related to special education and RtI services in order to provide opportunities for cross-training and growth.

Academic support:
  • Analyze ESS department data for trends and use this data to make department decisions.
  • Serve as a member of the Academic Leadership on both campuses and collaborate with Academic team members in service of the school’s vision and strategy.
  • Facilitate IEP, SAT and 504 meetings in conjunction with the ESS Coordinators; serve as ODR in IEP meetings.
  • Create and manage Special Education, RtI, Section 504 and ESL databases.
  • Evaluate ESS team members with Compass or school-based evaluation tools.
  • Select and monitor effectiveness of intervention curricula and data tracking programs.
  • Oversee Gifted & Talented Coordinator to manage and implement Gifted & Talented processes.
  • Oversee the Extended School Year (ESY) program.

Operations:
  • Maintain a permanent inventory of equipment available to students with disabilities
  • Supervise and manage the annual budget for special education.
  • Assist in the annual update of the Pupil Progression Plan.
  • Maintain an accurate database and files of former and current students served in special education.
  • Maintain an updated log of accommodations to support students in standardized testing.

Compliance:
  • Ensure compliance in accordance with state and federal law (student counts, IEP meeting scheduling, SER reports).
  • Train and coach ESS team members in compliance requirements.
  • Complete and submit all required state and federal reports in a timely manner.
  • Arrange for Pupil Appraisal services as needed.
  • Protect the confidentiality of student educational records in accordance to FERPA.

Human resources:
  • Participate and lead in the hiring and evaluation process of ESS team members.
  • Coordinate the contracts and invoices of external related service providers.

Other Duties:
  • Participate in faculty meetings and professional learning communities' meetings.
  • Assist in orientation and open houses if requested.
  • Model non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Perform carpool, lunch, recess, bus, or other duty as assigned.
  • Be punctual, reviewing and following all Staff Handbook policies and procedures.


Requirements
Expectations, Skills, and Education Requirements
  • Strong commitment to the mission and vision of Lycée Français
  • Proven commitment to academic excellence and to meeting the needs of diverse learners
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with an international corps of teachers
  • LA certification in any field of Special Education with Special Education teaching experience
  • 7 - 10 or more years of successful teaching experience in an urban setting
  • Knowledge and foundational fluency in federal and state special education law and policy (IDEA, LA Bulletins 1508, 1530 and 1706)
  • Proficiency in SER (Special Education Reporting System)
  • Able to disaggregate, interpret, and analyze data
  • Knowledge of research findings and recent trends in RTI
  • Experience leading professional development for ESS teams as well as general education teachers

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree or other advanced degree(s) in special education or related field
  • 2+ years of experience in an ESS leadership role
  • Proficiency in written and oral French
