Job Details
The Office of Internationalization provides leadership and support for the University of Denver’s (DU) efforts to internationalize the curriculum and the campus. At DU, students and scholars from overseas are part of our community, and our faculty and students are encouraged to study, research, and offer service in a global context.
International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) supports internationalization at the University of Denver by serving as a resource to students, faculty, and staff in meeting the needs of the international community on campus through programming and immigration services.
Position Summary
The Senior Advisor participates in formulating and implementing office polices and operational practices for international students and scholars based on Federal and University regulations. The Senior Advisor provides comprehensive advising to all international students and is primarily responsible for the oversight of the sponsored student program as well as employment services/policy for F-1/J-1 students in collaboration with the Primary Designated School Official (PDSO) and Responsible Officer (RO).
Essential Functions
Immigration Compliance & Advising
- Responsible for compliance and reporting with relevant Department of Homeland Security and Department of State regulations and policies to continue the University’s authorization to enroll F and J students
- Serves as government-authorized Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the University’s F and J immigration programs.
- Verifies the non-immigrant status of F and J international students.
- Acts as the primary signatory for immigration documents (I-20s and DS-2019s) for F and J international students.
- Advises non-immigrant students and scholars on immigration regulations including maintenance of legal status, employment authorization, etc.
- Analyzes and evaluates complex situations involving multiple stakeholders and advises on courses of action
- Acts as a liaison to resolve complex immigration-related issues
- Advises international students on personal, academic, financial, and cultural issues to support academic and personal success
- Effectively communicate with stakeholders to communicate complex matters to non-native speakers of English
Employment/Career Compliance & Management
- Develop, design, and implement comprehensive programming and training (i.e. Advising sessions, workshops) for F and J international students
- Liaises with offices across campus to create programs and support services that address specific employment needs of international students
- Assists the PDSO/RO to determines ISSS policy and procedures for students requesting employment authorization benefits
Sponsored Student Program Management
- Liaises with sponsoring agencies and embassies to manage sponsored international scholarship students programmatic requirements
- Provides logistical support to students and helps sponsored students communicate with their academic departments and sponsoring agencies
- Provides progress reports/transcripts to sponsors, advocates for student success, and coordinates third party billing with Student Financial Services
- Meets with sponsors and assists Office of International Admissions and other recruitment offices to sponsor visits to DU
- Explore and implement international student program development
Supervision of Student Staff
- Supervise student staff assistant
- Oversee projects to student workers responsible for immigration document processing, programming, and other administrative support
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of complex federal immigration regulations for the F and J programs
- Ability to exercise judgment and advise international students on immigration matters
- Engage in recruiting activities with international admissions colleagues
- Recognize problems, gather information, propose and/or implement solutions
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- 2- 3 years of professional experience serving as an international student and scholar advisor in a higher education setting
- Strong interpersonal and intercultural communication skills; in particular, experience working with non-native speakers of English
- Knowledge of F and J employment authorization, immigration regulations, and experience in interpreting and applying the appropriate federal immigration regulations to student cases
- U.S. citizenship or permanent residence to serve as DSO/ARO
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite
Preferred Qualifications
- 4-5 years of professional experience serving as an international student and scholar advisor in a post-secondary setting.
- NAFSA: Assn. of International Educators membership
- Experience living abroad
- Knowledge and experience with student databases (i.e. Banner, Terra Dotta)
Working Environment
- Standard office environment Noise level is quiet to moderate
Physical Activities
- Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.
- Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

The salary grade for the position is 8.
Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $52,000 - $57,000
The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
