POSITION: Program Assistant/Medically-Fragile Students - Student Services (JHHS) 37.5 hrs/wk

ASSIGNMENT: 10 Month, Grade 5 - Temporary /Grant Funded Assignment Effective November 18, 2022 - June 2, 2023

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: This work involves close interaction with staff, students and parents/guardians, with the primary emphasis on the implementation of specialized or vocational educational programs. A Program Assistant works under the direction of an Education Association staff member. An employee in this position is expected to exercise independent judgment, discretion, a high degree of confidentiality and react appropriately in crisis situations as well as exhibit initiative, creativity and organizational skills.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must have or obtain State of Illinois Professional Educator License with stipulations - endorsed for paraprofessional.
  • Must demonstrate appropriate interpersonal skills.
  • Must project a positive image of the district to the public, parents, staff and students as well as exhibit a positive employee attitude.
  • Must move around in the classroom and other parts of the building as well as on field trips as needed.
  • Must move about frequently including sitting, walking, standing, stooping, bending, pushing wheelchairs, using ramps as well as having the ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs.
  • Must have previous experience working with youth.
  • Must have ability to adapt to all subject areas.
  • Must have knowledge of computer operations.
  • May need a valid driver's license.
  • Must complete district-approved Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training within one year of starting the position.
  • Must complete district-approved training to support the needs of medically-fragile students in accordance with students' IEPs and Health Care Plans.

POSITION EXPECTATIONS:
  • Assists an Education Association staff member by providing specific health care for medically-fragile students as outlined in the IEP and the Health Care Plan. Health care is defined, but not limited to, gastrostomy (g-tube) feeding, surface suctioning, Vagus Nerve Stimulation and other procedures as allowed by law.
  • Assists students under the direction of an Education Association staff member by:
    • tutoring
    • implementing classroom procedures and reinforcing student positive behaviors
    • administering tests orally to students
    • reinforcing organizational and note taking skills
    • grading materials for immediate feedback
    • demonstrating use of the computer for both drill and remediation as well as homework assignments
    • helping students achieve their IEP goals
    • maintaining medical equipment
    • assisting students during loading and unloading from bus
    • assisting, as needed, with students' medical and non-medical physical needs or personal care/toileting needs
    • implementing students' health care and evacuation plans as necessary
  • Assists an Education Association staff member by:
    • helping organize and supervise off-campus programs for students
    • performing classroom related clerical tasks
    • assisting with lab set-up and clean up
    • explaining classroom procedures and materials to substitute teacher when necessary
    • previewing instructional materials
    • acting as a liaison to communicate student progress
    • providing information to case manager and/or nurse regarding heatlh-related issues
    • compiling data and documenting pertinent health information and services provided
  • Continues job performance improvement by participating in appropriate professional growth activities.
