Position Description
The Department of Counselor Education (EDCO) (http://www.sjsu.edu/counselored/) at San José State University (https://www.sjsu.edu/) is recruiting a new tenure-track faculty colleague to join our department beginning in the 2023-24 Academic Year at the rank of Assistant Professor. We invite applicants with expertise in counseling and student support within higher education. Scholars who specialize in community college contexts are especially welcome to apply.

Our students complete a Master of Arts degree in Counseling and Guidance (https://www.sjsu.edu/counselored/academics/index.php) with the option to add courses and fieldwork leading to the Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) School Counseling Credential (https://www.sjsu.edu/counselored/academics/pps-credential.php) (required to work as K-12 School Counselors in California), and a Child Welfare & Attendance Authorization. Students also have the option to complete preparatory courses and fieldwork associated with Associate & Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (APCC/LPCC) requirements (see: http://www.sjsu.edu/counselored/ ). Required Qualifications
- Applicants must hold an earned doctorate (e.g., Ed.D., Ph.D., Psy.D.) from an accredited university in Counselor Education, Clinical/Counseling Psychology, Student Affairs & College Counseling, Social Work, Behavioral Health, or related field (ABD applicants will be considered if terminal degree will be conferred prior to appointment).
- Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially, linguistically, and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.
- Applicants should demonstrate expertise and potential to teach and conduct research about key issues associated with college counseling such as clinical issues, mental health, college student development and/or educational counseling theories, practices, assessment, career development, supervision, and policy issues within a graduate counselor educator preparation program.
- Applicants should demonstrate evidence of a commitment to justice, diversity, anti-racism, and inclusion in counseling work; and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Priority will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:
- Practitioner experience within the community college sector and/or record of research on community college students and settings.
- Expertise, teaching, and/or scholarly record focused on college student counseling, college student development, and success of racially minoritized students and communities within community college settings.
- Expertise, teaching, and/or scholarly record focused on counseling, development, and success of students representing the diversities of gender and sexual identities, expressions, and experiences within community college settings.
- Potential in curriculum development.
- Current counseling-related license(s) and/or credential(s).
- Graduate-level teaching experience.
- Evidence of engagement in, and recent publications and/or conference presentations related to postsecondary educational or mental health counseling.
- Written and spoken fluency in two or more languages represented within the communities of the Bay Area of California.
Key Responsibilities
- The candidate will teach graduate courses in the M.A. in Guidance and Counseling, K-12 school counseling and professional clinical counseling programs.
- The candidate will supervise and advise students in their respective program plans and field experiences.
- The candidate will mentor students in research and professional development, including supervising projects and theses.
- The candidate will maintain a research agenda related to issues in counseling and PK-16 education.
- The candidate will collaborate with faculty to support program coordination, program evaluation, curriculum development, recruitment and admissions processes, and developing durable internship and career development partnerships with area schools and colleges.
- The candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
- Faculty will utilize SJSU's Learning Management System (LMS) in connection to their courses.
- The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity - in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation - through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
