Summary

Provide leadership around the career services for international students within a large, comprehensive, fast-paced, career services office, which includes supervision of student and/or professional staff. Manage and demonstrate expertise in multiple career tracks, related tools and resources, international hiring practices, and global employment. Provide area oversight and offer, career coaching, advising and programming for international students on a variety of career-related and student growth issues including self-exploration, career exploration, advanced education, and job search issues utilizing knowledge of the theory, current research and best practices in the knowledge domains of: international employment, student development, career development, student learning, decision making, learning styles, social identity development, leadership, multicultural counseling, counseling processes, evaluation tools, and job search processes.

The Coordinator, International Student Career Services is a full-time, 100%, 12-month appointment position in the UM University Career Center (UCC), in Student Life. The Coordinator focuses on assessing the unique career needs of international students and designing and implementing relevant and scalable services to meet those needs via multiple delivery modes, as a complement to the resources and services available within UM schools and colleges. The incumbent will work with external constituents such as employers and alumni and collaborate with the UM International Center. The Coordinator's focus is on building awareness of UCC services for international students; forging connections on campus and beyond; developing educational materials; and serving as a key resource and advocate for international students' career-related matters. Must be willing and available to work some nights and weekends as well as travel when needed.

Responsibilities will be prioritized as follows: Leadership/Administrative 50%; Student Development/Career Coaching 30%; Data Management/Benchmarking/Reporting 15%; International Center Liaison 5%

Responsibilities*

Leadership/Administration 50%
  • Provide leadership around the career services for international students within a large, comprehensive, fast-paced, career services office, which includes supervision of student and/or professional staff. Exercise autonomy in the management of the assigned area of responsibility within the office.
  • Recommend and implement policies, procedures and programs that allow students to develop self-knowledge by translating their educational experiences into career choices that are congruent with their skills/competencies, interests, values, and the role they wish to play as contributing members of a diverse society. Assist students in developing lifelong learning skills to prepare them to manage their careers.
  • Comply with and educate others on career related legal, the global job search, regulatory policy, and ethical guidelines including Federal regulations and laws (e.g., affirmative action and EEOC standards, FERPA) hiring practices, and safety programs. Maintain confidentiality on work with students and student records.
  • Manage effective and efficient use of program or service resources, including proposing realistic budget projections and anticipated expenses.
  • Manage and demonstrate expertise in multiple career tracks, related tools and resources, international hiring practices, global employment, and employer and alumni outreach.
  • Establish strong liaison relationships and work collaboratively with the International Center, and other university departments, academic units, student organizations, employers, and external constituents to promote awareness and encourage use of career services.
  • Work in close partnership with the International Center to ensure impactful programming and up-to-date resources.
  • Serve as liaison to UM Ann Arbor departments, offices, international student-focus organizations and other campus partners as appropriate.
  • Actively and creatively promote UCC's services for international students.
  • Maintain regular communication and periodically conduct focus groups with international students, alumni and employers. Utilize relevant information to determine best practices and training sessions.
  • Forge collaborations to minimize duplication of services, building upon available school/college services and resources.
  • Serve on UCC and campus-wide committees, task forces, work groups, and advisory committees for international student-related matters.
  • Reach out to and build relations with external constituents such as employers and alumni to maximize opportunities, educate partners and promote connections.
  • Cultivate relationships with U.S. and global employers to facilitate greater interest in international students.
  • Supervise professional staff member.
  • Keep abreast of employer/recruiting trends and employment visa options for international students, working closely with and referring to the International Center.
  • Participate in/organize site visits, on-campus meetings, global online career events and other opportunities for students to connect with employers.
  • Develop a strong network of contacts for appropriate referrals on and off campus.
  • Facilitate alumni connections to build networks and inform and advise current international students.
  • Participate in relevant professional development opportunities and associations, with a commitment to staying abreast of trends and issues in the field, and sharing expertise with colleagues.
  • Lead and serve on committees and task forces within the unit and represent the unit on Division-level committees.
  • Active involvement in the profession at local, regional, and/or national level. Includes committee work, conference presentations, and contributing to the literature.
  • Forward the mission and goals of unit and division within established set of organizational values.
  • Promote the highest standards of the profession in accordance with the principles ethics, and standards of ACPA, NASPA, NACE, and CAS, and established good practice in Student Affairs.

Student Development/Career Coaching 30%
  • Foster student learning, development, and enhanced educational experiences through direct service interventions, career coaching, advising, interactive programming, teaching, etc. to guide clients through all phases of their career development including actively engaging in their own learning. Provide appropriate referrals for students to other agencies if assistance needed is beyond career counseling.
  • Using student development and resource expertise, educate students regarding access to educational, experiential, and multimedia career information to aid career and educational planning and life choices. Includes gaining experience through student activities, community service, employment, research or creative projects, and experiential learning in multiple sectors (profit, not-for-profit, public service, arts, as examples) as well as helping students to reflect on those experiences to understand and make meaning of them all within the context of OPT and CPT.
  • Oversee, create, implement and evaluate intentionally-designed, educationally-driven interactive programs focusing on initiatives that increase the career readiness and competence of international students planning to pursue U.S., third country, or global employment or graduate education. Topics may include: co-curricular involvement and gaining relevant experience, job search strategies, visa authorization process and limitations, and success skills development utilizing knowledge and skills in program design, marketing, resource management, and group process. Conduct individual presentations, coordinate panel presentations or electronic media; utilize appropriate program assessment. Includes providing off-site assistance to students in residence halls, fraternities and sororities, and student groups at weeknight and weekend meetings.
  • Incorporate assessment tools (i.e. CS, MBTI and SII) in career coaching and programming as appropriate, requiring knowledge of theory, administration and interpretation of instruments.
  • Utilize current technologies, social media and information management tools, demonstrating creativity in service delivery to benefit students and improve organizational effectiveness. Stay abreast of full range of resources available to students and assist Center in maintaining a current, state-of-the-art collection.
  • Design and implement initiatives utilizing knowledge of social identity theory and research to maximize participation of diverse campus community to create a positive learning environment for all students. Includes informed perspective regarding issues of race, ethnicity, gender orientation, sexual orientation, ability, and national status, as examples.
  • Assist students in understanding the transferability of their academic coursework as they explore possible next steps.
  • Support students to be successful in the implementation of their job/educational choices through resume and interview preparation, use of on and off-campus job search strategies, employer/school selection, and negotiation of acceptance.

Data Management/Benchmarking/Reporting 15%
  • Manage continuous improvement in areathrough systematically using data to manage by fact (i.e., includes data gathering, best practice benchmarking, and program assessment). Keep accurate records and statistical information on clients using computerized data system.
  • Serve as expert for area of responsibility providing written reports and other communication strategies to educate others regarding defined student population, current issues, and national trends in area of responsibility, as needed.

International Center Liaison 5%
  • Collaborates with the International Center on services, resources, and programming including the International Career Pathways Program and similar initiatives.
  • Meets regularly to review trends, remain up to date on policies, and to discuss impact.
  • Represents the UCC to International Center staff to ensure effective referrals.
  • Represents the International Center to UCC staff to ensure effective referrals.

Required Qualifications*
  • Master's degree in student affairs, counseling, or related field which includes the broad-based study of theory and research in career and student development, counseling, social identity, student learning, multicultural counseling, basics statistics to complement relevant skill sets.
  • Lived, worked, or studied outside of home country
  • Demonstrated understanding of international and/or cross-cultural issues
  • Minimum 2 years professional-level experience career coaching and counseling and engaging in group process and programming
  • Minimum 2-3 years in program design based on student learning objectives and evaluation
  • Minimum 2 years managing programmatic efforts including overall strategy, implementation, and assessment
  • Minimum 2 years experience establishing priorities and exercising sound decision making on relevant issues
  • Minimum 1-2 years experience in a large, centralized, complex, fast-paced office
  • Minimum 1-2 years experience with multiple student populations including international students, first generation students, LGBTQ+ students, students with disabilities, first year students and international students
  • Minimum 1-2 years experience managing a program or service in an office that places a high value on quality customer service, team orientation, intentional planning, continuous improvement, and puts students at the center
  • Familiarity with computers and software, and the use of internet as an advising tool
  • Ability to leverage social media in promotional and outreach efforts

Desired Qualifications*
  • Understanding of international employment practices
  • Professional Certification includes certification and experience with the following assessments: CliftonStrengths, Strong Interest Inventory, and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
  • Specialized Knowledge: experience with Picktochart or other graphic design packages
  • Familiarity with student and/or employment visa options(F-1, J-1, H-1B practical or academic training)
  • Proficiency in a second language

Supervision

General supervision is received from Assistant or Associate Director. Will supervise the Career Coach for International Students

This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.
