The International Services Office (ISO) at the George Washington University facilitates international educational exchange through its services and programs. It serves as the primary administrative, programming, and advising office for the GW international community. This position is ideal for someone in the field of ISSS who is looking to move into a management and leadership role, and gain experience working at a prestigious institution, and international travel is also possible in this role. The role of Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) and Responsible Officer (RO) are held by the Assistant Provost. However, with interest, training, and mutual agreement, the Director may take over these areas of responsibility after establishing themselves successfully in the office.
Core Responsibilities:
  • The Director, International Services reports to the Assistant Provost of International Education and serves as the second in command over international student and scholar services.
  • This position oversees the functional operations, the ISO student workers and directs a team of ISO staff. They will maintain a supervisory role over the international admissions processing team in the International Services Office.
  • Serves as the front-line contact in relation to compliance with F-1/F-2 and J-1/J-2 student requirements of the DHS Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and provides support to ensure SEVIS Registration compliance deadlines are met.
  • Provides guidance and interpretation on federal government policies and procedures that relate to international students, exchange visitor students, and their dependents.
  • Makes policy recommendations to leadership on matters affecting international students and scholars.
  • Supervises the coordination and collaboration with GW schools, colleges, and academic programs for the effective delivery of information, advice, and guidance on federal policies governing the academic lives of international students
  • Serves as the designated point of contact in matters of employment-based visa sponsorship processing.
  • Represents the ISO and the international student population on University councils, committees, and working groups and leads special projects undertaken by these groups.
  • Manages and cultivates the team responsible for supporting GW’s international students, scholars, researchers, faculty, and staff and leads the International Student Advisors on complex and unusual cases.
  • Delivers support services to international students in a culturally appropriate manner in accordance with federal policies governing the extracurricular lives of international students. This includes thedesign and administration of training sessions, seminars, and workshops for the International Student Advisors, other ISO staff, and international students.
  • Advises, counsels, and assists international and exchange visitor students on: visa issuance and renewal, cultural adjustment and other personal matters, maintenance of lawful non-immigrant status, federal academic requirements, employment in the U.S., and other matters regulated by the federal government.
  • Identifies international students most at risk for academic difficulty, including academic suspension and withdrawal and intervenes by providing advice, assistance, referral, and follow-up. Additionally, they will confer with faculty members and administrators to ensure academic progress and success.


Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 8 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 6 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
