The International Student Counselor is a vital position in the enrollment, retention, and graduation of undergraduate and graduate international students (exchange, visiting, and degree-seeking). This position will report to the Executive Director and will serve as the main point of contact for all enrolled international students from the point of orientation until graduation. This position will work closely with Student Affairs colleagues and colleagues in other divisions, particularly Enrollment Management, to support international students throughout their enrollment. This is a 12-month, non- exempt position.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a primary resource for international students during their enrollment; this includes managing a general office e-mail account and a phone line, and responding to inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Become knowledgeable of University programs and proficient in supporting and referring international students, when needed
  • Work as part of a team to manage the international student website and an international student newsletter
  • Collect, collate, and organize data regarding international students for sharing with other offices, faculty, staff, or other internal or external constituencies; prepares, updates, and/or disseminates documents, statistical reports, publications, and surveys
  • Provide particular personalized administrative support, customized advising services, and assists with specialized billing, to/for sponsored international students and their sponsoring agencies. This involves, but is not limited to the following student and sponsor services:
  • Coordination between the admission office, academic departments, student billing, academic support services, health services, and the English as a Second Language (ESL) program after a student is enrolled until graduation;
  • Resources and information on housing options for sponsored students;
  • Personalized advising services to support the sponsored students’ welfare during their studies;
  • Orientation and on-going support for new and transferring sponsored students;
  • Coordination of campus services and resources for sponsored students with disabilities;
  • Transcript evaluation, and assistance with registration, degree planning, and placement for sponsored students;
  • Respond to at-risk reporting of sponsored students with appropriate student outreach, referral and follow-up;
  • Support the student appeals and petitions processes for sponsored students;
  • Notary services, as needed.
Evening/weekend work and overnight travel is required when needed.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree required with a master’s degree in cross-cultural communication, educational counseling, area or cultural studies, foreign language, international education, or TESOL preferred.
  • Two years of relevant experience working in a student-facing role in a higher education setting
  • Previous experience working with a diverse student body, and experience working with international students preferred
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in a positive way with people from different cultural backgrounds
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and written and oral communication skills
  • Experience working as part of a team
