DESCRIPTION

The Department of Political Science was founded in 1974 and currently has 38 ladder-rank and 11 adjunct faculty who represent a broad spectrum of backgrounds, methodologies, and approaches. A relatively young department, Political Science has skyrocketed to prominence among peer institutions in the United States. A recent National Academy of Science study ranks UCSD among the top graduate programs in political science in the country. The doctoral program encompasses five broad sub-fields: American Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Political Theory and Methodology. Each year, the Department of Political Science supports nearly 100 scheduled undergraduate courses, 40 graduate courses, over 50 summer session courses, over 12,000 undergraduate course enrollments, and 1,400 undergraduate majors. The department receives an estimated 300 graduate program applications and attracts significant levels of extramural funding in support of research projects.

Under direction of the Student Affairs Manager, serves as the Student Affairs Coordinator for the Department of Political Science. Primary responsibility includes: planning the Graduate Speaker Series events and providing student and advising services to undergraduate students on matters related to the Political Science undergraduate programs. Provides undergraduate program and graduate program support, including, but not limited to: processing payroll transactions for graduate students via UCPath; serving as the department OSD liaison for undergraduate students; processing graduate student reimbursements; helping to plan the PhD open house; assisting with graduate student fellowship opportunities; overseeing the assignments of textbooks for all classes and obtain desk copies of textbooks.
  • This position has a hybrid schedule with 2 days in the office and 3 days working from home.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge and experience working with a diverse student population.
  • Experience in event planning in an academic environment.
  • Payroll transaction experience (UCPath experience preferred).
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Excellent reading and comprehension skills to understand and interpret complex materials and documents. Ability to provide information and/or instructions in a clear, concise manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer services skills (poise, active listening, tact, diplomacy, patience, discretion, assertiveness) to effectively interact with students, staff, faculty and the general public in-person, by telephone, and via email.
  • Demonstrated accuracy and orderly work habits. Ability to proof and correct own work with strict attention to detail. Working knowledge of standard correspondence formats.
  • Strong skill in organizing work and prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines despite frequent interruptions. Ability to manage a heavy workload and handle multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
