The Academic Counselor Lead-Undergraduate Programs serves as the primary lead for academic advising in the Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) department. This position manages a team in developing advising materials and/or counseling resources for students. These advising activities include counseling current and prospective students regarding course majors, career options, academic planning, degree requirements, interpretation of course major and graduation requirements, university and program admissions, and related matters. The position also evaluates applicants for admission to academic programs or specific courses of study.
This position provides direction and management of undergraduate academic advising services to undergraduate students in the ECE department. This position administers the department satisfactory academic progress policy and prepares probationary action when necessary. It is also responsible for interpreting University, College and department policies related to academic programs and student issues for students, faculty and staff. This position is critical to the educational mission of the university as it manages the academic services and support for 650 undergraduate students in the ECE department.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ADVISING AND COUNSELING (50%)
- Lead academic advising and counseling of undergraduate student body, with targeted student populations to include Direct Freshman Admits, Direct-to-College admits, STARS students and VA students.
- Advise and counsel EE student majors regarding academic goals, admission procedures, course pre-requisites, degree requirements, extra-curricular opportunities and career opportunities in collaboration with undergraduate academic counselor.
- Manage review of academic progress of ECE undergraduate majors in collaboration with Faculty Director and undergraduate advising staff members.
- Provide the Academic Services Director and Faculty Director with regular reports and analysis of student progress.
- Administer the department satisfactory academic progress policy and prepare probationary action when necessary.
- Advise ECE student groups, including the UG honor society and professional society.ADMINISTRATION (30%)
- Supervise 100% FTE academic counselors, para-professional student staff members, and jointly supervise 100% FTE program assistant.
- Communicate regularly with University and College of Engineering advisers and represent ECE at campus advising meetings.
- Attend curriculum committee meetings and participate in ABET accreditation activities as necessary.
- Oversee and review undergraduate time schedules each quarter.
- Review and make approvals of and/or recommendations on student petitions.
- Collaborate with Academic Services Director and Department Administrator, as well as COE staff, to manage departmental scholarship award process.
- In conjunction with other advising staff, coordinate the development and revision of advising publications and other informational items.ADMISSIONS (20%)
- Manage ECE undergraduate student admissions process in collaboration with Faculty Director and Academic Services Director.
- Counsel students denied admission on possible alternatives, including re-application to the program.
- Coordinate process for admissions appeals and serve as a resource to the appeals committee when necessary.
- Organize new student orientations in cooperation with Academic Services Director and Undergraduate Academic Counselor.Lead Responsibilities: This position leads undergraduate academic services in ECE including advising, admissions, orientation, curriculum, and scholarships.Supervisory Responsibilities: This position supervises 2-3 100% FTE academic counselors, 1-2 para-professional student staff members, and one 100% FTE program coordinator. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Master's Degree in Educational Leadership, Student Affairs, Counseling, Teaching, or related field.
- Three to five years of experience in university advising, admissions or related experience. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with faculty, staff and students, including ability to work as an effective team members. Must be able to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
- Team oriented with collaborative approach to work responsibilities.
- Ability to interact with people from diverse backgrounds, including those for whom English is a second language.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain successful campus partnerships.
- Excellent administrative and organizational skills and ability to manage a high volume of varied, detailed tasks simultaneously in a fast paced, deadline driven environment.
- Successful supervisory skills, personnel management and resource allocation DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Professional experience in higher education, experience managing academic programs and interacting with industry in a higher education setting.
- Familiarity with UW academic policies and procedures related to academics and curriculum.
- Interest in working in a multi-cultural and diverse environment.
- Superior interpersonal skills and the ability to successfully present to a broad range of audiences including faculty, staff, students and community partners.
- Experience in curriculum development.
- Proficiency in Microsoft suite applications and web development software and databases including the SDB.
- Working knowledge with Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
