The Associate Director of Study Abroad serves as the primary liaison working with WMU faculty to develop and deliver faculty led programs. In collaboration with the Director of Study Abroad, the Associate Director oversees the faculty led program development process and procedures, including development of program budgets and reconciliation, manages the program applications and advises faculty on program development. The Associate Director manages a portfolio of faculty led programs, with the support of the Study Abroad staff. The Associate Director of Study Abroad supervises a team of Study Abroad Specialists and provides support for their work and professional development.

The Associate Director of Study Abroad serves as the superuser for Terra Dotta (branded “Broncos Abroad” at WMU), and is responsible for maintaining and improving the systems and processes that utilize Terra Dotta. The Associate Director assists the Director of Study Abroad with study abroad risk management and with initiatives and training for students and faculty in preparation to participate in study abroad programs.

About the Haenicke Institute for Global Education

The Diether H. Haenicke Institute for Global Education, established by the Board of Trustees in 1998, creates and sustains an environment which facilitates the global engagement of the WMU community.

The institute is comprised of professional staff and faculty led by an associate provost who reports directly to the University provost. Institute staff work closely with the International Education Council of the WMU Faculty Senate, as well as with international education committees and projects within and across colleges.

WMU has a long history of international involvement, dating back to 1911, when the University granted its first degree to an international student. The University’s first study abroad program was launched in 1945 and the establishment of exchange relationships with international institutions began in 1961. WMU opened its first transnational education—or twinning—program in 1987.

The Haenicke Institute for Global Education houses the following units; Study Abroad, International Student & Scholar Services, Asian Initiatives, CELCIS: Center for English Language & Culture for International Students, Faculty Development and Global Programs and Global Engagement Activities.

Western Michigan University Internationalization

In addition to Internationalization being one of WMU’s seven strategic priorities, WMU is currently participating in the American Council on Education (ACE) Internationalization Lab 2.0. The ACE Internationalization Lab 2.0 was created for those universities that had gone through the first internationalization lab with ACE.

The Kalamazoo Promise

The Kalamazoo Promise was announced in 2005 with the declaration that students who graduate from the Kalamazoo Public Schools and meet the basic requirements will receive up to 100% tuition and mandatory fees paid for at any in-state public community college or university. The first of its kind, The Kalamazoo Promise began in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 2005 among a group of anonymous donors who recognized the hurdle that college tuition poses in determining the futures of young people. Minimum qualifications

• Master's Degree in related field from an accredited institution. Three years' relevant experience. Supervisory or lead experience. Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational skills. Ability to work both independently and in a team environment. Experience with student advising. International work or study experience. Experience and ability to work with diverse populations. Experience in working with third-party providers. Experience in crisis intervention and conflict management. Ability to travel both domestically and internationally. Proficiency in a second language.
