The University of Pikeville (UPIKE) in Pikeville, Kentucky seeks a dynamic and creative professional interested in leading and directing the Kentucky College of Optometry (KYCO) student affairs and academic excellence initiatives. In collaboration with the Assistant Provost of Retention and the KYCO Dean this position is responsible for wide-ranging responsibilities requiring knowledge of student development and student services, with the objective of supporting KYCO through the development and implementation of higher education best practices with an emphasis on student and academic support services and programming. This includes student engagement, success strategies, learning skills, time management, and preparation for board examinations. The position requires extensive interaction with the KYCO dean, faculty, personnel, and with the University's broader retention services team.

  • Provide leadership by developing, planning, goal setting, implementing, evaluating, and accountability for student affairs/success, academic support services, diversity initiatives and programming.
  • Supervise and coordinate academic support services, including tutoring, learning success strategies, skills, time management, and partnering with KYCO faculty to assist with preparation for national board examinations.
  • Assist in coordinating and connecting students to university-wide services, including health and wellness, tutoring, the Center for Disability Resources, academic advising, registration, financial aid, co-curricular activities, and career planning.
  • Manage KYCO co-curricular programming including orientation, Clubs and Organizations, White Coat Ceremony, Commencement, admitted student days, and student engagement events.
  • Work with students to create a community by supporting student clubs and organizations, such as KYCO's student government and by encouraging students to participate in co-curricular activities both in KYCO and the broader campus community, including international and domestic medical mission trips.
  • Serve as a member of the Care Team and work closely with the Assistant Provost of Retention to provide direction and intervention for KYCO students in crisis and non-crisis situations (e.g., intervening with students in mental health crises; assisting with the administration of the student code of conduct; working with UPIKE staff and faculty to resolve student concerns; mediating and resolving conflict; conducting student referrals; etc.).
  • Manage multiple ongoing processes, including students' changes of status, leaves of absence, anticipated/unanticipated absences, technology and equipment distribution.
  • Develop and manage a comprehensive KYCO student outreach and communication strategy in collaboration with the Dean's office to include a social media presence, web content, and periodic email reminders related to registration, graduation, and other important events.
  • Collaborate with KYCO Administration to implement programming and processes such as course remediation, board examination preparation, , academic planning, with an aim to increase overall student success.
  • Implement an Early Alert System (EAS) for tracking academic and student success.
  • Develops and implements regular training and workshops in conjunction with University Professional Development for faculty, administrators, staff, and professional students.
  • Collaborates with KYCO Administration and Institutional Research to provide data regarding student affairs/success in KYCO.
  • Provides regular reports for assessment and planning purposes to University leadership.
  • Develops and administers the assigned budget.
  • Hires, trains, schedules, supervises, and evaluates the work performance of assigned personnel, peer mentors, and graduate assistants.
  • Writes grant proposals as part of a University-based team focused on academic affairs/success as needed.
  • Under the supervision of the Assistant Provost of Retention and the KYCO Dean, maintains a positive working relationship with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Maintains confidential records regarding interactions with students in accordance with FERPA and HIPAA Regulations.
  • Engages in professional development opportunities as provided.
  • Other duties as assigned.


This position requires daily contact with co-workers, supervisors, students, faculty, and staff in order to advise and promote KYCO student affairs/success. These relationships are maintained through email, fax, telephone, and person-to-person contact.

  • Master's degree from an accredited college/university in education, counseling, student affairs, or related field is required; PhD. preferred.
  • Five (5) years of academic support services and/or student affairs experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of progressive responsibility as a leader and/or manager and managing a team to achieve goals.
  • A theoretical background in academic success and/or student affairs and experience working with professional students with a range of academic abilities including, first-generation students.
  • Strong technology skills and experience with tools for scheduling, recording, and tracking student data, assessment of student outcomes, and data analysis.
  • Experience with the use of educational technology for support and proficiency in the use of a Learning Management System and an EAS.
  • Ability to work collaboratively on nights and weekends as needed.

Skill Requirements:
  • Knowledge and theoretical background in effective practices in academic support services and student affairs.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws relating to FERPA and HIPAA as pertaining to academic support programs and student affairs.
  • Knowledge of leadership and management principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of accounting, budgeting, and fiscal reporting.
  • Knowledge of due process for resolving student and employee complaints or issues.
  • Effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Build and maintain collaborative internal and external relationships with broad constituencies.
  • Use appropriate technology for data tracking and reporting.
  • Implement innovation in academic support processes and student affairs.
  • Supervise staff, graduate assistants, and student workers.
  • Relate to and empathize with the needs of students. Ability to exercise group leadership skills, which emphasize collaboration, consensus building, conflict resolution, and problem-solving.
