Departmental Overview

We offer two graduate degree programs; a Doctor of Optometry (OD) program and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Vision Science program. We also offer a one year residency program for ODs.

Responsibilities

OD Student Support (e.g. Advising, Academic Progress, and Financial Assistance) (40%)
  • Assists students in their holistic development (including but not limited to academic, physical, spiritual, emotional, financial, etc.) utilizing one on one meetings, coaching, mentoring, workshops and other programmatic initiatives.
  • Serves as the initial point of contact for all enrolled OD students.
  • Reviews OD student progress throughout each academic semester.
  • Identifies students with progression problems, offers timely interventions and skill building, and refers cases to the Academic Advisory Committee (AAC).
  • Attends AAC meetings to provide additional information and context to the committee.
  • Is familiar with campus resources for students in crisis and makes appropriate referrals.
  • Checks in with students who are struggling to provide support.
  • Provides guidance and mentorship to OD Student Clubs and Government including registering with the LEAD Center, event planning within the department, and leadership development.
  • Responsible for ensuring each organization has a faculty advisor.
  • Conducts training as appropriate.
  • Serve as a liaison (in conjunction with AD of Admissions) to Foresight, UC Berkeley's pre-Optometry organization.
  • Advises OD students on registration and course schedule.
  • Provides support to Coordinator for course scheduling and batch enrollment.
  • Advises OD students on immunizations, graduation, and Optometric licensure requirements.
  • Advises OD students on the job market process and the standards and norms specific to Optometry.
  • Manages content for professional development activities (e.g. StrengthsFinder).
  • Performs resume and cover letter workshops and reviews as requested.
  • Builds community among each OD student cohort.
  • Meets with class leaders each semester and advocates on their behalf.
  • Works closely with the Coordinator, Assistant Dean, Administration, and faculty to oversee the administration, evaluation, and awarding of student fellowships, grants, scholarships, and other awards; advises students on financial aid options on campus and fellowship opportunities.
  • Networks with central offices on campus in an effort to provide students with greater access to information and resources.
  • Creates, provides and distributes information through various methods to the School community.
  • Advises faculty on School and university policies and procedures.
  • In conjunction with Assistant Dean, develop processes to streamline information and efficiency.
  • Serves on committees (as appropriate).

Student Development Event Planning and Implementation (including Milestones) (35%)
  • Plans and implements complex, high-visibility student events, including, but not limited to New Student Orientation, White Coat Ceremony, Business Management Immersion Program, Halfway There, New Home Night, Old Home Days, Fourth Year Awards Banquet, and Graduation.
  • Supports other ASAO staff with other events as needed.
  • Creates timely and necessary programming based on student needs.
  • In conjunction with student leadership, maintains and facilitates the Big/Little Sib program.
  • Assists in the planning and implementation of Optometry and Vision Science Summer events, including OptoCamp, Jumpstart, and ViSUR.
  • Collaborates with Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) Team on sponsored student programs and events.

Diversity and Inclusion (10%)
  • In collaboration with upper administration and the Director of Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, and Belonging, creates a diversity retention plan for OD students.
  • Assists in creating diversity recruitment and retention opportunities.
  • Serves as a member of the DEI&B committee.
  • Attends workshops and conferences focused on Diversity and Inclusion in Higher Education.

Office Management (5%)
  • May supervise students and staff.
  • Helps supervise and train peers and less experienced team members.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises office student worker staff.
  • Other administrative duties as needed.
  • May include processing of invoices and expenses or serving as back-up to front desk duties.

Professional Development (5%)
  • Takes classes/workshops that will enhance expertise in professional areas of interest and growth and will enhance the current work environment.
  • Participate in university service activities.

Required Qualifications
  • Ability to multitask in a fast paced department, work under multiple deadlines, and have the ability to prioritize workflow in a logical/linear manner to meet strict and important deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Outstanding communication skills, including written, oral, one on one and group.
  • Ability to work with and communicate with faculty.
  • Excellent customer service skills and interpersonal skills, multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of and/or ability to learn about University specific computer application programs and proficiency with SIS applications.
  • Proficiency with Windows applications, Adobe, bConnected and FileMaker Pro.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy.
  • Skills in judgment and decision making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
  • Ability in problem identification, reasoning.
  • Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems and not be deterred by ambiguity.
  • Ability to be resourceful, creative, innovative, and flexible.
  • Excellent active listening skills.
  • Ability to give and receive objective behavioral feedback.

Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent training and/or experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/Training:
  • Master's in Higher Education, Organizational Leadership, Coaching, or Counseling preferred.
  • Experience working in a higher education or professional school setting is preferred.

  • Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
  • The budgeted salary that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $68,000.00 - $78,000.00.
  • This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
