Job Details

The University of Maryland, Baltimore seeks an International Scholar Advisor who will primarily serve the international scholar and employee population at UMB. The advisor will also be expected to provide support to international students, as needed. The International Scholar Advisor focuses on providing compassionate, individualized advising to international scholars and UMB departments while ensuring institutional compliance with federal regulations governing UMB-sponsored visas. This position is eligible for up to two days a week of telework.


Essential Functions

  • Provides immigration advisement to international scholars and employees on J-1, H-1B, TN, and E-3 visas.
  • Performs a critical review of non-immigrant visa sponsorship requests and supporting documents. Ensures all reasonable steps are taken to secure nonimmigrant visa status eligibility for international scholars and employees and maintain compliance with U.S. government regulations (i.e., completing required reporting on international scholars on J-1 scholar visas as required by Department of State regulations, issuing forms DS-2019 for new and continuing J-1 scholars, and filing H-1B, TN, and E3 petitions with USCIS). Prepares the most challenging cases for supervisory review.
  • Provides excellent customer service to international scholars and their host departments by way of timely email and phone responses.
  • Recommends departmental scholar-related processes and procedures.
  • Updates and delivers the monthly J-1 Scholar Orientation presentation.
  • Serves as a first point of contact to direct international scholars and employees to UMB and local resources for acclimation to the U.S. culture and workplace.
  • Provides support and advising to F-1 and J-1 students on an as needed basis.
  • Assists with the front-desk related tasks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in related field preferably in International Affairs/Studies, Education, area/ethnic studies, foreign language studies or related field.

Experience: Two (2) years of related experience in immigration regulations or VISAs, preferably student or scholar immigration regulations or VISAs.  

U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residence by Department of Homeland Security and Department of State regulations is required to serve as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).*
