General Function:

The Bilingual Diagnostician administers and interprets psychoeducational and/or developmental tests for students with learning, developmental, and/or emotional disabilities. Provides information on child development issues to school personal and parents. Provides recommendations for program development and student placement. Provides referral information to IEP teams. Ensures compliance with federal, state and district policies. Provides recommendations for the intellectual, adaptive, academic, social and emotional development of children. Interprets results of psychological studies. Interprets and applies state and federal codes. Develops strategies and interventions to address the special education needs of eligible students.

Education/Training/Experience:

Minimum: Master's degree in field and internship and current New Mexico Diagnostician Certification.

Preferred: Bilingual: English-Spanish

Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:

Effective communication skills, both verbal and written. Flexibility, organization, decision-making and problem solving skills. Interpersonal skills with diverse populations in-person and on the telephone. Ability to meet deadlines, work on multiple projects and coordinate the work of others. Knowledge of District policies on immunization, medication, first aid, emergencies and child abuse/neglect. Knowledge of evaluation and placement process. Knowledge of an integrated evaluation/placement process. Mediation/conflict resolution skills.

Essential Job Functions:

Performs all functions in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the organization. Current essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Administers and scores a variety of standardized and/or supplemental assessments for the purpose of conducting evaluations and assessing proficiency of students to determine placement and/or program eligibility.
  • Assesses students' functional capabilities and/or classroom environment for the purpose of determining student's functional levels and developing recommendations for placement.
  • Communicates with students and/or parents with teachers and/or other personnel for the purpose of evaluating situations, solving problems, establishing effective relationships, and/or resolving conflicts.
  • Compiles information from a variety of sources (e.g. teachers, nurse, probation officer, mental health agencies, other professionals, etc.) for the purpose of producing a comprehensive evaluation report in compliance with established guidelines.
  • Consults with teachers, parents, other personnel and/or outside professionals as appropriate for the purpose of determining students' needs and developing plans for services, and or making recommendations.
  • Furthers personal education via staff development, college courses, etc. for the purpose of staying current with latest and best practices, and learning new theories and technology.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all information for the purpose of protection of students, staff, parents, and district. Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Prepares a wide variety of written materials (e.g. documentation of test results, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Prepares and presents educational workshops as appropriate for the purpose of presenting information, developing skills, and establishing effective relationships.
  • Prepares diagnostic reports (e.g. test results, interpretation, etc.) for the purpose of developing appropriate recommendations based on test results and case history.
  • Researches resources and methods (e.g. intervention and treatment techniques, assessment tools and methods, community resources, etc.) for the purpose of determining the appropriate approach for addressing students' functional goals and needs.

Salary Range and Benefits:

$54,048 to $56,000

Medical, dental, and vision benefits are available to full and part-time employees that work a minimum of 20 hours per week.

Standard office equipment and software platforms such as Microsoft Office and the Google Suite.

Physical/Cognitive Requirements:

Regularly required to stand; move throughout a room and/or facility. Communicate verbally and electronically. Use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. Occasionally required to sit, climb, and balance, and drive. May have occasion to perform heavy lifting up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and private automobile. Some evening or weekend work and travel may be required.

Environmental Conditions:

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Some occasional travel is required for meetings and conferences.
