The Institute of International Education (IIE) is seeking a current student for a summer Thomas S. Johnson internship opportunity. The internships, established in honor of Thomas S. Johnson, Chairman Emeritus of IIE’s Board of Trustees, are designed to expose students to the day-to-day operations of a leading international education and exchange not-for-profit that values diversity equity and inclusion. IIE internships allow students to gain insight into the field of international education, learn about career opportunities and establish a network.
IIE’s Fulbright Team is seeking an intern to assist with two projects to further access and encourage diversity in participants academic programming as well as in participants enrichment opportunities. This will include surveying and cataloging disability services at U.S. universities, and researching and proposing diverse enrichment locations and subject matter for Fulbrighters in the U.S.
Working with our Placement Team, the intern will identify academic institutions that have been particularly supportive of international students with disabilities. This will include surveying institutions on their experiences with international students with disabilities and the accommodations and resources available, collecting responses and synthesizing responses to present on findings. This may also include collecting access information through research and from IIE teams working with participants.
Working with our Events team, the intern will conduct research on, and ultimately propose, cities and topics for the 2023-2024 FFSP Enrichment Seminar season. Each seminar explores a different topic of importance to the host city. Examples include “From Then to Now: Exploring the Legacy of the Civil Rights Movement” in Atlanta, “Action in the Face of Crisis: Responding to Coastal Climate Change” in New Orleans, and “The Transformation of an American City through Music” in Nashville. Specifically, the intern will identify cities that represent the diversity of life in the U.S., offer interesting and topical subjects to explore in each city, and research potential host partners, speakers, site visit locations, and community service opportunities that are relevant to the proposed topics. The intern may also be asked to conduct additional work in support of the Events team including, but not limited to, helping to reorganize the teams shared box folder, conducting research on the impact of past events in terms of DEIA and other metrics, and supporting Pre-Departure Orientations.
By the end of the internship, the intern will:
Launch, review and synthesize a university survey focused on access.
Prepare one-pager with information on disability inclusion in U.S. institutions to be shared with program stakeholders and participants to communicate useful inbound information and encourage disability inclusion in global outreach/recruitment.
Research and write an enrichment program proposal with 10 – 15 diverse cities / projects for potential enrichment events in 2023-24.
Summer internships will take place between late May 2023 and early August 2023.
Internships may be 8-10 weeks in duration up to 35 hours per week with core working hours 9am – 5pm EST but subject to flexibility.
$17.00 per hour.

A multidisciplinary undergraduate/graduate student matriculated at an accredited college or university.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to work independently.
Strong research and writing abilities.
Interest and or experience with cross-cultural programming, study abroad, international students or scholars.
Work Conditions & Physical Demands:
Essential functions are performed in a general office setting with low noise. Job demands may require long periods of sitting; telephone work and/or computer work, as well as interactions with other team members and external stakeholders.
