*Essential Job Duties:*The Assistant Director of Study Abroad Advising is an integral part of the Study Abroad Office leadership team and is responsible for directing student advising, supervising the advising team, and strategic management of exchange, direct enroll, affiliate and summer partner programs. This position is also vital to ensuring that study abroad is accessible and inclusive for the entire NC State student population.*
Direct Student Advising *

* Direct study abroad advising and administration of all non-group programs (all programs except faculty-led programs)
* Lead advising practices that align with University and office philosophy, policies, and best practices while utilizing campus and industry resources.
* Maintain and update the student application process, application review process and exchange redirects, conduct checks, and eligibility appeals for all non-group programs.
* Administer post-decision advising for exchange, direct enroll participants, and summer partner programs, including nominations to partner institutions and pre-departure preparations.
* Guide curriculum integration efforts to identify study abroad programs that align with departmental, curricular goals in close collaboration with the academic units.
* Support advisors’ collaboration with the academic units to facilitate strategic course mapping.
* Develop workshops and presentations for faculty, departmental coordinators of advising, and academic advisors regarding study abroad opportunities, processes/best practices, and to garner support for and promote study abroad opportunities.
* Maintain study abroad student resources (e.g., advising by area of study, student identity resources, and student handbook).
* Ensure student health and safety content for pre-departure orientations and handbook/resources reflects best practices, update as needed.
* Lead assessment of existing exchange, direct enroll programs, and summer partner programs to leverage strategic partnerships and ensure a diverse portfolio of programs that meet the needs of students and academic units.
* Support advising team regarding students of concern.
* With the Director of Global Partnerships, support the review and management of exchange agreements.
* Strategically direct development of any new exchange, direct enroll, summer partner or affiliate programs.

*Full-time Staff Supervision *
* Supervise three full-time Study Abroad Advisors and the University Program Associate.
* Support advisors in managing their program portfolios and global responsibilities, assess and evaluate performance, and manage workloads.

*Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion*
* Create equitable advising practices that foster inclusive excellence within the advising team.
* Maintain and update advising materials for specific underserved student populations.
* Expand outreach advising in the OIED Campus Community Centers and with other campus partners in coordination with the study abroad advising team.
* Develop and lead student workshops and panels addressing cultural competence, diversity and inclusion in partnership with colleagues across the University.
* Represent the office on university-wide diversity committees and serve as liaison to the national organization, Diversity Abroad Network.

*Manage Advising Portfolio*
* Serve as advisor for participants on study abroad programs within designated colleges and regions (currently the College of Textiles and University College/Exploratory Studies) through program selection and application.
* Coordinate and administer a subset of exchange, direct enroll, and summer partner programs (currently the Americas and Sub-Saharan Africa). Serve as an on-site program leader or staff assistant, as needed.

*Emergency Response *
* Serve on the emergency response team, and assist the office in mitigating risk with a focus on student health and safety particularly as it relates to non-group programs.

The position will share in an on-call rotation of the study abroad emergency response phone.*Other Responsibilities:*
* Serve as an active member of the Study Abroad leadership team in developing and implementing new initiatives and a strategic plan.
* Represent NC State and Study Abroad Office on-site visits to international partners and for program development, as needed.
* Help position NC State as a leader in study abroad; represent NC State and Study Abroad Office at state, regional, and national conferences, as needed, and present sessions and workshops, when possible.
*Minimum Education and Experience:*
* Master’s degree in a relevant field, or Bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience.
* Minimum three years of professional work experience in the field of higher education or international education.
*Other Required Qualifications:*
* Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access in education abroad.
* Ability to demonstrate a thorough understanding of study abroad and exchange programs and student development theory and/or advising philosophy.
* Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in the development and management of study abroad programs.
* Experience in student or academic advising; ability to interact with, identify and understand the needs of underserved and underrepresented populations.
* Experience supervising; management and team-building skills.
* Demonstrated success working in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
* Excellent decision-making, organizational, and communication skills, including public speaking.
* Detail-oriented; ability to prioritize workload and adapt to changing demands and priorities; ability to thrive in a demanding job environment.
* Computer proficiency, including MS Office and Google suite.
* Demonstrated high work ethic with a willingness to work flexible hours, as needed.
* Possess both a high level of professionalism and thrive in a demanding work environment and exhibit empathy and enthusiasm in interactions with students, faculty and staff.
*Preferred Qualifications:*
* Master’s degree in a relevant field.
* Experience with student advising.
* Experience supervising professional staff.
* Experience studying, living, and/or working abroad.
* Previous experience working in a study abroad office and on a university campus.
* Experience managing student emergencies while abroad.
* Ability to prioritize workload, and adapt to changing demands and priorities.
* Familiarity with study abroad risk management best practices.
* Experience using Terra Dotta for Study Abroad software is a plus.
* Experience working with programs in or other demonstrated expertise in the Americas and/or Sub-Saharan Africa.
* Some Spanish language skills/experience.
* Willingness to engage in professional development to stay abreast of best practices.
* Capacity to proactively engage in new initiatives that require both creativity and follow-through.
