ASAP and ACE programs help students earn their college degree as quickly as possible, by removing the financial, academic, and personal obstacles that many students confront. The ASAP academic advisor is a member of an integrated team providing individual academic, career and related support to an assigned group of program students, utilizing a variety of modalities, as they progress towards their associate degree. Reporting to the ASAP director (or their designee) the academic advisor is responsible to carry out advisement services to their cohort of students in accordance with program policy, with the goal of retaining the maximum number of students each semester and graduating a minimum of 50% of each student cohort. The ASAP academic advisor will collaborate with other program staff, as well as faculty to provide coordinated services and support student success. The academic advisor assists with all program initiatives, including special events and recruitment, if necessary.

Kingsborough Community College was founded in 1963 and is one of 23 campuses of the City University of New York (CUNY) system and offers liberal arts education, as well as career training programs. Kingsborough has been named one of the leading community colleges in the country by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program. It has also earned national recognition for its creative and effective use of learning communities, for the large number of degrees it confers, for the high percentage of graduates who continue their studies, and for the innovative programs that draw thousands of non-traditional students to its campus every year.

Kingsborough serves a widely diverse population of approximately 14,000 students. Approximately 70% of Kingsborough's students are enrolled in a liberal arts or science degree program; the rest pursue degrees in more specialized, career-oriented programs such as business, communications, criminal justice, culinary arts, nursing and allied health careers, information technology, journalism, maritime technology, tourism and hospitality, and the visual arts. The college takes pride in its many support programs that enhance student success. All students are offered individual, personal and academic counseling; workshops to improve basic skills; and career planning and placement. Students enjoy the accessibility of Kingsborough faculty and administrators.

Kingsborough Community College is seeking multiple Academic ASAP Student Advisors. The Academic ASAP Advisor will report to the 2 Director of the Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) or his/her Designee. The work schedule will be Monday through Friday - two (2) days per week from 10:30am-6:30pm and three (3) days per week from 9am-5pm. ASAP at Kingsborough serves approximately 2400 students across most majors. Consisting of nearly 30 full-time and approximately 10 part-time staff members, it is a comprehensive service area that strategically interacts with areas across the campus to ensure student momentum toward degree completion and preparation for success post-graduation. The Academic ASAP Student Advisor, through a holistic and intrusive advisement approach, manages a caseload of approximately 150 students from program entrance through graduation ensuring academic, personal and professional growth and development, with the goal of graduating at least 50% of students within three years.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) in an appropriate discipline and four years related experience.
  • The preferred candidate will have:

  • Strong understanding of the needs and challenges facing students from diverse urban backgrounds

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, within the department and with faculty and other administrators

  • Strong organization, project management, communication, and facilitation skills

  • Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records of student activities

  • Computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office Suite, and aptitude to learn new systems as needed.
  • • Experience working to provide guidance, support and services to students
  • • Strong understanding of the educational needs and challenges facing students from diverse urban backgrounds
  • Demonstrated knowledge of equitable and inclusive advisement practices to support students Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.

The ASAP Advisor is a member of an integrated College team providing individual academic, career and related support to an assigned group of college students as they progress through the program.
  • Delivers comprehensive advisement support services to an assigned group of students through degree completion
  • Conducts workshops and group advisement on topics of relevance and interest
  • Reviews student progress and tracks student use of academic support services
  • Conducts regular outreach to faculty and other college staff as needed to support student success
  • Maintains accurate tracking data and notes for each assigned student, recommending appropriate referrals and opportunity programs
  • Supports annual recruitment of students
  • Organizes periodic special events and programs for students, faculty and staff
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Health Plan Coverage for Employees Hired on or after October 1, 2022 City of New York employees and employees of Participating Employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after October 1, 2022 will only be eligible to enroll in the EmblemHealth HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.

After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period.

If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day.

Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period. An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the EmblemHealth website.
