THE DEPARTMENT

The College of Professional and Global Education supports Cal Poly Pomona’s international initiatives by leading student and faculty mobility including Study Abroad and Exchange Programs and the International Student and Scholar Services, which maintains the university’s SEVIS compliance. CPGE advances global citizenship, cultural competencies, and diversity of the university campus through its programs. The position reports to the Dean of the College of Professional & Global Education.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinates with the ISSSO Advisors immigration advising services for F-1 students.
  • Responsible for J-1 student and scholarship documentation issuance and process oversight.
  • Plans work and develops work assignments.
  • Provides accurate advisement to international students and scholars and academic departments on complex immigration regulations.
  • Maintains current knowledge on federal immigration policies and procedures and trains ISSS unit staff on these matters.
  • Provides advisement and refers students in matters of academic, personal, and financial concerns. Coordinates institutional SEVIS reporting.
  • Functions as the Lead ISSS staff member and serves as the PDSO (Principal Designated School Official) for the campus.
  • Represents the unit in the development and coordination of the SEVIS Batch process. Takes part in the development of the unit’s goals and objectives.
  • Oversees procedures for maintenance of student information and creation of files.
  • Reviews health insurance policy to ensure compliance with CSU requirements and clientele needs.
  • Collaborates in the planning of orientation and other programs for students.
  • Develops content for and coordinates workshops regarding CPP, visa regulations, tax filing, and scholarships.
  • Provides training to advisors and staff on immigration regulations on an ongoing basis.
  • Represents the unit and college in campus committees.
  • Works closely with Admissions & Enrollment, I&IT, Registrar, Academic Advisors, Health Center, and other University departments on various matters regarding student wellbeing an institutional compliance.
  • Coordinates the work of the student assistants and recommends students for hiring.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
  • Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.
  • A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

 

Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior. General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques; general knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned. Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of policies and procedures and practices of the University, the College of Professional and Global Education, federal requirements for foreign students and visiting faculty, as well as U.S. immigration regulations.
  • Knowledge and experience in advising/counseling techniques and general knowledge of student services programs. Has to be able to serve as PDOS/ARO as per U.S. Immigration Requirements.
  • Five years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience required in a university advising international students and scholars.
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting immigration regulations and effectively resolving complex situations.
  • Confidential counseling and advising background to assist international students concerning academic, personal, and financial and immigration issues.
  • Experience with Terra Dotta and Peoplesoft databases, and Windows PC environment, experience with SEVIS.
  • Experience working in a multicultural environment and communicating with non-native English speakers.
  • Experience in training and operations coordination
  • In-depth working knowledge of immigration and SEVIS regulations and application procedures.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to handle complex situations in the absence of the administrator-in-charge and take action as needed.
  • Ability to advise students individually and in groups concerning complex immigration matters and take proper measures to solve problems or issues.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Expertise in Terra Dotta, Peoplesoft, SEVIS, and other database applications.
  • Experience in working with US Federal Agencies and Department of Homeland Security Regulations.
