JOB SUMMARY:

Provide consultation, technical support, and coaching of special education compliance requirements, procedural requirements, behavioral needs, and student performance for all Preschool-12th graders who receive special education programs and services or those who are suspected of needing special education programs and services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provide support to staff in all aspects of the delivery of special education programs and services and associated compliance requirements.
  • Review student data systems and communicate with the building administrators and director of student services to ensure special education compliance related to IEPs, evaluations, progress reports, discipline, and tier III behavioral supports.
  • Provide leadership, support, and technical assistance to MET and IEP teams in conflict and/or as needed, including facilitation of difficult IEP meetings.
  • Consult and/or participate in Manifestation Determination Review meetings.
  • Collaborate with related service staff, special education teachers, general education teachers, administrators, and parents regarding individual student needs.
  • Participate in student support team meetings K-12.
  • Collaborate with ISD staff to best meet the needs of teams and individual students.
  • Know and be able to educate others on federal and state rules and regulations pertaining to special education.
  • Assist with assessing, determining areas of need, and providing professional development related to student services and special education.
  • Keep the student services director informed of issues, concerns, and needs related to student services and special education.
  • Develop positive working relationships with building administrators and staff, members of the special education department, students, and parents.
  • Participate in/lead threat assessment processes and building-level crisis response teams.
  • Maintain and protect the students' rights to confidentiality.
  • Coach and provide professional development to staff on the use of evidence-based practices to support academic and behavioral instruction.


Other Functions of the job include but are not limited to the following:
  • Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic, and ability backgrounds
  • Encourage parent and community involvement, obtain information for parents when requested, promptly return phone calls and answer emails
  • Participate in appropriate professional activities
  • Other duties as assigned


KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with an endorsement in at least one area of special education or a valid special education licensure or certification (i.e. School Social Work, Speech and Language Pathologist, School Psychologist, etc.)
  • At least five years of experience in special education programs/services.
  • Michigan approval as a Supervisor of Special Education or eligible for State of Michigan approval or temporary approval as Supervisor of Special Education pursuant to Rule 340.1751 preferred.
  • Knowledge of State of Michigan special education rules and regulations, staff management, corrective discipline, knowledge of state and federal special education law, and knowledge of or direct work experience with special education programs and services.
  • A minimum of three years of experience, working with students with intensive social-emotional needs is preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in assessing the function of student behaviors and developing positive behavior intervention plans.
  • Extensive knowledge of MTSS.
  • Ability to collect, summarize, and graph behavioral data.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the use of technology to support instruction and data collection.
  • Demonstrate exceptional leadership skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Must have the proven ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis with the ability to work beyond the school day to attend meetings held before or after school.
  • Meet professional certification requirements of school, district, and state.
  • START training, CPI, and CPR certifications preferred.
  • Perform all other related work delegated or required to accomplish the objectives of the total school program.

SALARY: Commensurate with experience and training

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices, and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25+ pounds.
