POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, the Assistant Dean will manage and direct the work of the GSE degree programs staff who support over 20 doctoral programs, five master's programs, three joint degree programs, undergraduate programs, postdoctoral scholars, curriculum planning, and course scheduling and support. The position will take a lead role in identifying and addressing needs related to students thriving academically, and creating programming and developing resources that promote inclusion and wellness at the GSE. The Assistant Dean serves as a primary point of contact for students and will be responsible for triaging student concerns, responding appropriately to students in distress or crises, helping students access appropriate resources, and collaborating with and making referrals to University offices to provide broad-based student support while implementing appropriate administrative processes as needed.

The ideal candidate will have a track record of leadership in the student services/affairs field. As a critical member of the Academic Affairs leadership team, the Assistant Dean must possess qualities of a strategic thinker, team/relationship builder, initiator and motivator, and have experience with managing and coaching staff. Working closely with program directors, Area chairs, and faculty members, the role requires both a student-centered and academic policy-orientation and a commitment to improving students' academic experiences. The position will require a high degree of collaboration with students, faculty and staff at the school, as well as university-wide student support resources. The Assistant Dean will engage this work both as an individual contributor as well as in the supervision of student services staff.

This is a full-time, student-facing position that is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement in which the employee will be expected to work a minimum of 2-3 days onsite per week, subject to demonstrated competencies and operational need.

Your primary responsibilities will include:
  • Direct and manage the work of the GSE degree programs staff and oversee processes and projects to implement the strategic goals for student services. Make hiring decisions, provide coaching and mentoring, and manage performance and staffing levels.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact to triage and resolve complex student issues with university-wide scope and impact and substantial significance which may span multiple areas, using advanced technical and professional knowledge requiring broad discretion and judgment.
  • Provide strategic direction for student services and engagement at the GSE, including forecasting, planning, and managing program budgets.
  • Work with School and University leadership in the evaluation, assessment, and continuous improvement of student support and services, particularly in relation to the GSE's broader mission to enhance diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
  • Manage high-level escalation and resolution of exception requests from students with a high degree of autonomy and discretion.
  • Advise the Dean, Associate Deans, Area Chairs and Program Directors on policies and procedures affecting students at all levels and in all programs, and recommend and implement effective support models, policies, and processes for student services.
  • Interpret, implement, and communicate student and academic policies to multiple audiences, guide students, faculty and staff in understanding and upholding policies.
  • Take the lead in creating programming and developing resources that promote inclusion and wellness at the GSE.
  • Represent the GSE as a senior student services manager on relevant standing and ad-hoc University-wide committees.
  • Oversee and manage the implementation of changes to numerous student-related systems and technology; lead staff in the rolling out of new systems.
  • Identify, manage relationships, and negotiate with external and internal partners.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:
  • Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Advanced degree in education or related field, and experience in higher education/student affairs setting preferred.
