DESCRIPTION

The UCSD Mathematics Department is a dynamic unit with 67 faculty, approximately 30 additional non-FTEs in various instructional and research titles. These academics work on a broad range research funded from a diverse range of federal, state and private agencies. The department is comprised of 23 career staff, and 190 Master's and Ph.D. students. All working together to generate high caliber research in a broad range of fields and provides an outstanding graduate program that attracts top-ranked students who contribute to the department's academic reputation. The department maintains a large undergraduate course of study that prepares pure and applied majors (over 2400) in Mathematics, as well as 57 other majors across the campus, with the strong fundamental background in mathematics needed to succeed in a variety of career options.

The faculty are engaged in a vigorous research program with an average of 72 active awards in many interdisciplinary areas totaling approximately $20M/Yr. and an instructional program that enrolls approximately 40,000 graduates and undergraduates per year. As the fundamental language of science, Mathematics is an essential intellectual tool required by a trained workforce to create the technological advances of the future. The department is the home of The Center for Computational Mathematics (CCoM). It consists of a broad and diverse group of faculty, researchers, and students, who share a common interest in the mathematical aspects of computation. The department is also the home of the Director of the Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project, an intersegmental education project in California.

Using skills as a seasoned, experienced student services professional, provides the full range of student services within an organization such as an academic department, school, or college. Independently advises students and resolves student services-related issues on the full range of academic issues inherent within the organization. Advises faculty and management on a variety of student issues. Works with the department's / school's / college's management to recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures. Guidance on issues requiring in-depth knowledge of specialized programs is provided by offices specializing in those fields, e.g., the financial aid office, graduate division, or student learning center, OR by the chair / dean and faculty of the department / school / college. May administer funds for student programs.

The Student Affairs Manager in the Math Department collaborates, consults, and reports to the Director of Student & Instructional Services to manage operations and personnel for undergraduate advising, graduate advising, and curriculum/planning areas. This position is charged with the daily operation, administration, and management of the three areas within student affairs and actively participates in the development and implementation of new advising programs, policies, and procedures affecting Math undergraduate students, graduate students, and non-math majors enrolled in Math courses.

The incumbent assumes full responsibility for the management of the unit in the absence of the Director of Student & Instructional Services and represents Math student affairs at divisional and campus levels. Other important responsibilities include the initiation, leadership, oversight, and coordination of student engagement, student career development, and alumni relations activities. Responsible for designing, enhancing, and collaborating with staff to coordinate advising procedures and editing standard advising communications/ publications (printed, emails, and web). Participate in short and long-term planning affecting student affairs for the Math department.
  • Occasional weekends/evenings may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Working knowledge of academic advising and counseling techniques. Comprehensive understanding of academic programs, processes, and operations in a large public research university. Ability to analyze individual cases and make independent decisions based on professional knowledge and academic senate, university, and campus policies and procedures. High-level critical thinking and interpretive skills to analyze situations, define problems, identify concerns, develop, propose, and implement solutions.
  • Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences. Extensive knowledge of UC academic policies and procedures, as well as federal and state laws, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) and ADA, as they apply to student records and services.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal. Ability to write concisely, persuasively, and in summary form. Skill to compose, edit and proofread narrative sections of printed information. Ability to express verbally one's position, plan of action, evaluation, or interpretation in a professional, concise, and courteous manner.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to communicate with faculty, students, and staff using tact, diplomacy, and discretion. Ability to clearly and concisely communicate ideas, thoughts, and complex problems. Ability to make well-organized, clear, informative, and persuasive presentations, both in one-on-one situations and in group settings. Ability to respond well to rapid questioning on difficult issues.
  • Knowledge of complex U.S. visa and immigration procedures, compliance issues, and employment eligibility/authorization for international students and scholars.
  • Ability in problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems. Strong analytical, inductive, and deductive reasoning skills. Strong demonstrated problem-solving skills. Demonstrated high-level critical thinking and interpretive skills to analyze situations, define problems, identify concerns, develop, propose, and implement solutions. Creativity to analyze and solve unusual and new problems in ways that establish effective and efficient procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer systems and applications, including advanced skills in the use of databases, spreadsheets, word processing, presentation, and related software.
  • Strong understanding of good management, administrative, and personnel practices. Proven supervisory skills and ability to monitor production and quality of work, and set performance standards. Ability to assess staff capabilities and to delegate, assign, and redistribute work as necessary. Ability to teach/train staff in all aspects of job duties/responsibilities.
  • Strong knowledge of undergraduate and graduate programs, administration of curriculum, fiscal, and personnel activities. Ability to analyze policies and procedures and advise students, faculty, administrators, and others about requirements.
  • Skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
  • Demonstrated ability to extract pertinent information from computerized databases and other sources, conduct analyses, and prepare proposals and reports.
  • Knowledge of systems; grading, transcript and diploma production; student academic records management; document management systems; verification of enrollment; graduation and commencement; student fees, fee assessment and refunds; information/communication services and publications; and curriculum, course scheduling, and classroom management. Sophisticated knowledge of student information systems.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the importance of ensuring an equitable, inclusive, and diverse working environment, with the ability to work as a part of a diverse and collaborative team. Demonstrated competency and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Knowledge/experience in the field of diversity, equity, and inclusion, including an understanding of the historical and social context of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and of the complexities of the intersections of identities including, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, gender, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, and class background.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $43,900 - $91,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $21.02 - $44.01

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
