Associate Director, Student Affairs - AAP

Reporting to the director for student affairs in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences' Advanced Academic Programs division, we are seeking an Associate Director, Student Affairs - AAP who will assist in serving the non-academic student life needs for students enrolled in professional graduate programs at the Washington, D.C., Center, the Homewood campus in Baltimore, Maryland, and online.

The associate director will be responsible for managing areas of student engagement, case management, and enrollment services. Engagement areas include student organizations, educational programming, and experiential learning. Student areas include working with student disability services, financial aid, and student accounts, as well as helping students find housing, transportation, health insurance, and other services. Reporting to the director for student affairs, the associate director will join a student-centered, high-functioning, fast-paced, and collaborative team. This position is key to student development and success.

The associate director is an independent thinker with the ability to creatively address student needs, coaching, engagement, and retention. The successful candidate must be able to collaborate, communicate effectively, prioritize multiple tasks, work proactively, and take initiative in anticipation of future needs of the Student Affairs team and students at AAP.
  • Travel between Washington, D.C., and Homewood locations is required (occasionally for off-site activities). Reliable transportation expected. Flexible hours are required, including weekends and evenings, with occasional overtime work throughout the academic year.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • The associate director supervises three exempt student services administrators and several graduate assistants.

Leadership & Performance Management
  • Oversees the work of three graduate student employees throughout the year.
  • Provides consistent performance feedback.
  • Ensures a high level of staff engagement.

Student engagement
  • Leads the development of a comprehensive plan for all student programming.
  • Collaborates with other units of AAP, including faculty, on the orientation program and on residency program compliance.
  • Supports program design, delivery, and evaluation of student organizations and experiential learning programs in collaboration with two assistant directors.
  • Provides leadership and support for learning events such as simulations, travel residencies, competitions, and student conferences.
  • Coordinates with key campus partners in other units of the university regarding student engagement, inclusion, and success initiatives.
  • Manages student mass communication, including oversight of the student newsletter.

Services & resources
  • Collaborates with the Student Disability Services office to provide accommodation and services to students with disabilities.
  • Interacts with student services offices to ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to enrollment services, financial aid, and other student success initiatives.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of issues surrounding financial aid and student accounts.
  • Manages relationships with off-campus housing company for housing options for student.

Case Management
  • Work with faculty and counseling staff to respond to issues of mental health and civility with sensitivity and a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Work collaboratively to support JHU offices as they conduct and document informal investigations and administrative hearings for students who are referred for civility, ethics, and misconduct.
  • Work with the Student Affairs team to communicate issues connecting mental health, academic ethics, student conduct, and policy compliance.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Five years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in student affairs or similar degree preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of progressively responsible student services experience in an academic or student programming environment.
  • Three or more years of administrative experience in higher education is highly preferred.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Extensive education and/or experience will warrant additional consideration for compensation outside of the posted range.

Starting Salary Range: $54,080-$74,390-$94,710 Annually (Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
