The Associate Director of International Education will report to the Associate Vice President for the Center for International Studies (CIS). There are three functional areas within CIS: a comprehensive program of international student recruitment and admissions; International Student and Scholar Services; and Education Abroad and Away. The Associate Director of International Education will provide support through collaboration to all three functional areas to ensure alignment with the University and CIS goals. The Associate Director will provide leadership efforts that focus on establishing and maintaining international partnerships; promote, build, and coordinate international experiences through exchanges, semester abroad and faculty/staff led short programs; and will manage tools, software programs, and resources to engage stakeholders.

In consultation with the Associate Vice President for CIS, this position will develop, manage, and maintain the SCSU semester program portfolio and agreements, and will support international exchange students in cohort-model programs such as Binhai, 2+2.

The Associate Director for International Education will assess, establish, and inform safety and security measures for all Education Abroad and Away programming; provide oversight to contract management and budget development for international and domestic programs; and establish, evaluate, and review the course equivalencies processes in collaboration with academic units.

Build and Coordinate International and Domestic Experiences
  • Oversee a full-range of academic components to international and domestic travel experiences. This will include collaborating closely with faculty to build and support programs, demonstrating flexible and innovative ways to find solutions to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Advise students in selecting education abroad and away programs that will meet their academic goals, interests, and special needs.
  • Establish, evaluate, and review the course equivalencies for semester-long study abroad programs.
  • Assess, establish and inform safety and security measures for international and domestic travel programs, including faculty risk management training, student safety and security management.
  • Lead staff members on navigating student crises abroad; direct students and program leaders to in-country and on-campus resources.
  • Engage campus partners for continuous growth in University and CIS DEI efforts, including Multicultural Student Services, Women's Center, LGBTQIA+, American Indian, and Students Accessibility Services.
  • Engage in scholarly and creative activities and events in professionally relevant areas by membership in professional associations, and attend professional development workshops, seminars, and conferences. Serve on the MN State System Education Abroad and Away Work Group.
  • Comply with local, state, and federal mandates in regard to study abroad, including MN State System policy, State of MN law, the Clery Act, FAFSA, and more.
  • Coordinate and implement Pre-Departure Orientations for students participating in domestic and international experiences; present and articulate academic, social, and cultural expectations to international exchange students prior to students entering the U.S. and during international student orientation; enroll all students participating in education abroad programming in the State Department Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and institutional insurance policy.
  • Assist in managing and training of student workers, interns, and graduate assistants to promote education abroad and away opportunities.

Actively promote and market study abroad opportunities at recruitment and study abroad fairs, campus events, social media and additional opportunities as they are identified; Establish and Maintain International Partnerships
  • Serve as the primary contact for all SCSU semester programs and initiatives such as, but not limited to, semester@SCSU, 2+2 programs, 2+3 programs, 1+4 programs, Binhai, Rikkyo, and additional cohort model programs.
  • Coordinate and develop the exchange partner database for the campus community.
  • Implement and assist in the development of the St. Cloud State partnership plan to meet the institutional goals of internationalization.
  • Facilitate, update, and manage agreements, such as MOU's, and contract processes.
  • Develop international partner communication flows.
  • Provide outreach support to semester at SCSU students and students in cohort-model programs.
  • Serve in an administrative role to ensure compliance.
  • Identify 3rd party and international relationship opportunities.
  • Comprehensively maintain the relationships and conduct site visits when determined by the Associate Vice President for CIS.

Manage Tools, Software Programs and Resources to Engage Stakeholders
  • Serve on committees and workgroups that reform policies and practices regarding international education.
  • Provide innovative ideas and solutions for use of recruitment tools, analysis of processes, marketing and promotion of programs and events, using all forms of media and creative student engagement strategies.
  • Manage software used in student record-keeping.

Support international student orientation, ISSS, international recruitment and admissions, and all other programs and events related to international education.

Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree
  • 2 years of higher education experience in education abroad, international education, programming and advising, OR another student services area involving management of programs and services
  • 1-semester overseas experience, in a study or living situation
  • Extensive knowledge of and ability to utilize Terra Dotta (TD) or similar software; ISRS, SEVIS, Liaison, Navigate, etc.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in publication development, marketing, web design, and communication strategies
  • Ability to serve as Designated School Official (DSO) and navigate the Student Exchange and Visitor Program (SEVP) through the Student Exchange and Visitor Information System (SEVIS), issue I-20 and DS-2019
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, cross-cultural sensitivity and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a people from culturally diverse backgrounds (faculty, staff, outside providers and vendors, and students)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Significant, progressive experience in education abroad program advising and administration
  • Bilingual or multilingual
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in contract management and/or risk management
  • Experience with SEVIS and prior position as DSO/ARO
