JOB STATUS: Full-time, 12-month position (37.50 hours/week)


Dominican University’s Office for Global Learning seeks an enthusiastic leader to help us advance opportunities for our diverse student body to engage in study away opportunities, both international and within the United States, that will help them build intercultural competence and global citizenship. The Director will collaborate closely with university stakeholders to plan and implement study away opportunities for all students across the University. This position offers the opportunity for an ambitious person to help us re-imagine, implement, and grow programs that are leader in empowering graduates from diverse backgrounds to meet the challenges of an increasingly interdependent world.

This position reports to the Vice Provost and serves as an active member of the University Global Learning Advisory Committee. The Director of Study Abroad Programs collaborates closely with academic and student support units to offer transformational study away experiences, both international and within the United States.

  • Collaborates with Deans, Program Directors, Faculty and Staff to plan and promote study away opportunities (including service trips), both international and within the United States
  • Supports the development of customized study abroad offerings for specific academic programs or majors
  • Expands on and oversee study abroad informational events for students, including:
    • Outreach to current students
    • Recruitment of current students
  • Presents study abroad opportunities at admission events
  • Provides study abroad advising to undergraduate and graduate students
  • Manages the university Terra Dotta information system to process study away applications, administer internal workflows/communications, and to overcome challenges that occur while students are studying away
  • Maintains contact information for students studying away and support students and faculty members to overcome any challenges
  • Collaborates with Core Curriculum Director to evaluate and approve course equivalences for credit to be transferred in from non-DU programs
  • Maintains study away policies and procedures
  • Collaborates with the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence to coordinate appropriate training for faculty members engaged in study away offerings
  • Develops and maintain the study abroad website and make it easily accessible to prospective students
  • Manages the review of applications for faculty led study abroad/away program offerings
  • Coordinates review and approval of faculty led study abroad/away budgets
  • Participates in the following university committees:
    • High Impact Practices Committee
    • Global Learning Advisory Committee
  • Tracks and assesses the implementation of:
    • student study away participation
    • student exchange programs
    • faculty led study away program offerings
  • Works with the Vice Provost to develop institutional partnerships and collaborations
  • Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO)
  • Perform other duties as requested, delegated, or assigned by the Vice Provost


All qualifications are required unless otherwise indicated.
  • A bachelor’s degree required; a master’s level degree preferred
  • A minimum of two years of work experience in study abroad/away programs
  • Experience with health, safety, and insurance requirements for students going abroad on university-sponsored programs
  • Proven ability to collaborate successfully with diverse stakeholders
  • Experience working independently and in teams
  • Experience developing academic programs and in budget management
  • Experience working with university stakeholders to advance new initiatives


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of best practices and emerging trends in international and experiential education
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with teams
  • A strong service orientation
  • Creativity and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to develop and independently manage projects
  • Excellent networking, interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
  • Proficient computer skills, including database management and Microsoft Office Suite programs
  • Experience working with racially minoritized students and demonstrated experience creating,
  • organizing, and/or leading programs for minoritized student populations
