Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Director of Student Transitions and Family Programs, the Coordinator for Student Transitions provides leadership and strategy development for transition programs for new undergraduate students which may include first-year students, gap-year students, transfer students, and exchange students. This role is one of two coordinators that works on the Student Transitions team to maintain and implement curriculum and interventions designed around a scaffolded four-year roadmap. The coordinators implements program budgets for new student populations.

Student Transitions & Family Programs (STFP) supports new students through their transitions into the Washington University in St. Louis community and throughout their undergraduate studies to assure they build and sustain their academic and personal goals. STFP also supports the families of all undergraduate students through programs and events such as Parent & Family Orientation, Parent & Family Weekend, and the Family Webinar Series. The office brings together people, programs, and resources to provide an undergraduate experience of exceptional quality where all students are known by name and story and where they prepare themselves for lives of purpose and meaning.

The Student Transitions team implements curriculum and interventions geared towards various class experiences including pre-matriculation, first-year, sophomore, junior & senior, transfer & exchange, and gap-year experiences. The team employs over 150 student employees including a 13-member student executive board, 115 first-year orientation leaders and peer mentors (WUSAs), 10 student mentors working with transfer and exchange students (TXSMs), and 15 student staff supporting the sophomore year (2SAs).

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Student staff recruitment, training, and supervision.
  • Each coordinator directly supervises six to seven of thirteen student orientation coordinators and lead orientation leaders (called the Student Executive Board) who supervise a team of peer mentors and provide support to the new student experience. The coordinators provide direct supervision and day-to-day practical training and coaching for student employees. This includes conducting weekly 1:1s with six to seven student executive board members and co-facilitating student executive board team meetings.
  • Each coordinator indirectly supervises approximately 65 of 125 student employees working with new students which may include Washington University Student Associates (WUSAs) and Transfer and Exchange Student Mentors (TXSMs). The coordinators provide supervision around job related tasks and coach student executive board members in directly supervising a team of student employees.
  • Implement a centralized recruitment, selection, onboarding, and evaluation process of undergraduate student employees.
  • Provide student employees with timely feedback and manage work schedules.
  • Implement performance review process for student employees.

Implement, manage, and oversee curriculum development for high-impact initiatives, programs, and events for undergraduate students.
  • Event scope includes twelve to 2,000 participants ranging in scope from one hour to nine days.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of orientation and transition programs including all-class programs, mentor intervention programs, initiatives that contribute to the four-year roadmap, and other events. Past examples have included the following:
  • First-Year Experience Programs including traditions like First Day, Symphony on the South 40, and First-Year Finale.
  • First-Year In the Lou, off-campus programs connecting students to St. Louis.
  • First-Year Classroom Connections, a program aimed to connect students to faculty.
  • Gap-year communications and programming.
  • Develop content for communications for new students including website, newsletters, and social media groups.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in student affairs, higher education, or related field.
  • Knowledge of student development theory and demonstrated application developing and implementing student staff training.
  • Comprehension of current issues related to transition, student engagement, and student development.
  • Demonstrated experience in assessment and program evaluation.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and manage multiple projects.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including but not limited to, editing and copywriting, public speaking, and group facilitation.
  • Strong relationship building skills.
  • Demonstrate initiative, planning and organizing skills.
  • Ability to work in various settings, such as large teams, one-on-one meetings, and social settings.
  • Demonstrate creativity with programs and support services development and work effectively as a team player.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft office tools.
  • The ability to be on-call and work nights and weekends is required more than 35 days/year during special events such as student leadership trainings and retreats, orientation, and Parent & Family Weekend.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related field and three years related professional experience or equivalent education and experience to equal seven years.



Salary Range

$47,300.00 - $78,200.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
