Job Details

The Assistant Director oversees the J1 scholar program, advises on and files petitions for employment-based visas and permanent residency on behalf of the University, and provides leadership to the office and University on immigration related matters. 

Job Duties are as follows: 

Leadership: Responsible for assisting the Director (along with Assistant Director for Student Services and Associate Director for Perimeter College ISSS) in making decisions, providing oversight, determining goals and direction, and representing ISSS to on and off campus partners/committees, including weekly leadership team meetings. Will update/inform the ISSS director with key data, information about trends/issues/problems, and events or activities where attendance or assistance is needed, and help maintain downtown ISSS collaboration with its Perimeter College colleagues. 

Counsel GSU departments on the scholar policy and determine appropriate visa and process for international faculty/staff sponsorship. Review and analyze documentation submitted by all departments for compliance with all United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, Federal and State Department of Labor and Department of State laws, regulations and policies, as well as ensuring compliance with all GSU departmental and employment policies and procedures. Prepare H, TN, O, and E-3 petitions using USCIS governmental forms and following all USCIS guidelines and regulations. Direct and administer the application process for employees who have been identified as eligible for permanent residency via an employment based petition sponsored by GSU. 

Organize, collect, and provide data related to scholar services at GSU with ISSS, University partners, and federal agencies in order to develop and guide scholar policy/processes and respond to various requests. 

Supervise the J1 Scholar Advisor (Educational Programs Specialist) in ISSS regarding J1 regulations, related Sunapsis eforms and processes, appropriate communications with departments and scholars, development and administering of J1 policy and procedures, related web updates, orientation programs, and cultural events and activities for scholars. 

Support office services and projects as needed, including international student orientation, International Education Week, and student/scholar events. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree and three years of supervisory/management experience; or a combination of education and experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Masters Degree in related field; knowledge of federal regulations related to foreign students and scholars, of cross-cultural communication, and of a second language; effective supervisory, management, communication, presentation, database and time management skills; experience with Sunapsis or other immigration compliance software; must meet DHS’ requirements for Principal Designated School Official and Responsible Officer
