Job Details

The International Support Coordinator is part of the Office of International Student and Scholar Services at Vanderbilt University and is a key individual contributor responsible for assisting the ISSS team with providing advice and support to students, scholars, and dependents on matters concerning F and J status, cultural adjustment, and personal and related issues.

This entry-level position will serve in a supportive role for the ISSS advising team. This position will aid senior-level advisors by processing immigration documents, responding to routine emails, assisting with the design and implementation of programmatic activities, and supporting the SEVIS Manager with meeting government reporting requirements on a timely basis.

This position plays a key role to ensure institutional compliance with federal law under the Student Exchange Visitor Program and the Student Exchange Visitor Information System. This position will also work with the ISSS team to understand the needs of international students and scholars and recommend improvements to resolve personal and academic issues. Reporting directly to the Director, the International Support Coordinator collaborates daily with the ISSS team and frequently with campus partners across the university.

Duties and Responsibilities

Immigration Support: 50%

  • Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the university’s F-1 student program and J-1 Exchange Visitor program;
  • Assist ISSS advisors with the preparation and issuance of high-volume immigration documents for international students, scholars and their dependents, such as travel signature requests, SEVIS check-ins, program extensions, etc.
  • Assist SEVIS manager with reconciliation of data inconsistencies among systems to ensure integrity of data and timely and accurate data submission to the Department of Homeland Security;

Programming Support: 40%

  • Assist in development, coordination and delivery of ISSS programs, workshops and presentations;
  • Assist Assistant Director of Student and Scholar Engagement with planning, communication, and evaluation of sessions for newly admitted students, pre-arrival sessions, SEVIS check-ins, and orientation;
  • Liaise with campus partners on issues impacting international students and scholars, as directed by advisors;
  • Collaborate with international student graduate assistants on projects;
  • Research and provide resources and direct support for the international population on issues impacting their daily life, including (but not limited to) housing.
  • Engage with internationally focused student organizations;

Administrative Support: 10%

  • Communicate with international students and scholars via LiveChat, email, social media, and ISSS website;
  • Front desk coverage, when needed;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree is necessary.
  • One year of office experience is necessary.
  • One year of experience advising or counseling students in a higher education environment or working as a DSO or ARO is preferred, but not necessary.
  • Knowledge of F-1 and J-1 regulations, and experience with SEVIS and SEVIS batch processing is preferred, but not necessary.
  • Prior experience living or working abroad preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
  • U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required to access SEVIS.
