The School of Information (I School) advances knowledge and practice everywhere humans interact with digital technologies. Through interdisciplinary research and teaching we are committed to expanding access to information and to improving its usability, reliability, and credibility while preserving security and privacy. Our faculty conduct research in human-computer interaction (HCI), security and privacy, applied data science, and technology in developing regions.
We currently have over 1300 students in three professional master's degrees and an academic doctoral degree. Our Master of Information Management and Systems (MIMS) program trains students for careers as information professionals and emphasizes project-based learning. Our Master of Information and Data Science (MIDS) program is an online degree designed for working professionals with career goals in the emerging field of data science. The Master of Information and Cybersecurity (MICS), also offered online, offers a holistic approach to cybersecurity and prepares students for professional careers in cybersecurity. Our Ph.D. program in Information Science equips scholars to develop solutions and shape policies that influence how people seek, use, and share information.
The Assistant Dean of Student Affairs is responsible for providing leadership for over 1300 graduate students in the School of Information's ("I School") degree programs to enable success in fulfilling their educational goals. As a member of the Dean's Leadership Team, reporting to the CAO/Senior Assistant Dean, the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs provides vision, direction, and coordination for all student-facing functions at the I School including Admissions, Student Affairs, and Career Services. The AD is responsible for the full range of student experience in all four of our degree programs, and will develop and manage short- and long-range goals related to enrollment, student satisfaction, and employment outcomes. Primarily working through subordinate managers, the Assistant Dean supervises the Senior Directors of the Admissions, Student Affairs, and Career Services teams in the I School (currently three direct reports and 17 indirect reports), assisting them with policy implementation and complex decision-making.

25% Working closely with the Senior Director of Admissions, responsible for oversight of the admissions process for all I School students in our four graduate programs: admissions strategy and operations; recruitment and retention efforts; fellowships and scholarships; and complex student admissions, yield, and financial assistance matters, in concert with Graduate Division and the Financial Aid office. Supports the Senior Director of Admissions with complex admissions issues and policy decisions.
25% Working closely with the Senior Director of Student Affairs, oversees student services for all I School students in our four graduate programs: curriculum planning; student advising and support; student orientation and immersion events, and complex student enrollment and financial aid matters, in concert with the Registrar, Graduate Division, and Financial Aid offices. Supports the Senior Director of Student Affairs with complex student issues and policy decisions. Manages escalated student cases when necessary and provides logistical support to I School faculty and administrators in graduate student conduct cases and grade grievances.
25% Working closely with the Senior Director of Career Development, oversees I School career services, including policy decisions and support for internship searches and job searches for graduate students and recent alumni. Provides guidance for the Senior Director of Career Development on complex issues.
5% Makes decisions on performance, salary actions, hiring decisions, and other human resources related issues of managed staff.
5% Advises other academic and program managers on student issues and needs related to their programs.
5% Responsible for developing and implementing budgets for managed functions.
5% Professional Development.
5% Contributes to the School's diversity initiatives, developing strategies for the promotion of equity and inclusion in the technology sector as well as internal to the School.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Advanced knowledge of student advising and counseling techniques and demonstrated expertise in student experience in a higher education setting.
- Excellent skills to provide leadership on all aspects of communications, including dealing effectively with sensitive or complex issues or information.
- Outstanding oral, written, and presentation communication skills.
- Expert interpersonal skills, multicultural competencies, and ability to work with diverse populations of students, faculty, and staff
- Advanced abilities in problem identification, reasoning, developing innovative ideas to solve problems, resolution, and leadership.
- Demonstrated experience with and commitment to the values of access, equity, inclusion, and diversity in higher education.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $150,000 to $176,900 annually, not to exceed maximum of $200,700. This is a 100% FTE career position eligible for full benefits.
