The Office of International Affairs department-specific responsibilities are to:

  • Exercise professional judgment to advise and counsel international students on all aspects of their stay in the United States and at IU Indianapolis, while also ensuring that the University complies with federal monitoring and reporting requirements.
  • Participate in the development, maintenance, and growth of staff expertise in the laws and regulations governing international students and in promulgating IUPUI policies and procedures that ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Plan, develop, and conduct programming to educate international students and the IUPUI community on the laws, regulations, policies, and procedures governing international students.
  • Serve as immigration expert to other IUPUI departments and as liaison with state and local government agencies on issues related to international students.
  • Keep abreast of immigration regulations and advise students on matters related to maintenance of legal status, travel, and employment options.
  • Operate as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate.
  • Function as a Responsible Officer (ARO).
  • Prepare visa documents, process program extensions, transfers, and requests for employment authorization; assist students wishing to change to F-1 or J-1 student status or file reinstatement to regain F-1 or J-1 status; work with government agencies and immigration attorneys to resolve sensitive immigration problems.
  • Ensure that immigration documentation needed to maintain legal status of international students is prepared accurately and efficiently.
  • Develop and maintain Student Services procedural and policy documentation.
  • Serve as liaison to local or state government agencies regarding issues related to international students.
  • Serve as team lead and back-up support for an assigned portfolio of specialized international student advising and services as assigned. Serve as a resource to students on matters of daily living, finances, cultural/academic adjustment and university policies/procedures.
  • Act as an advocate and assists international students in gaining access to university and community services. Monitors student adjustment and well-being, reaching out when necessary to provide needed support.
  • Maintain familiarity and assist students with navigating policies and procedures, such as obtaining a social security card, driver's license, and filing tax forms.
  • Participate in and support programming to assist international students in their adjustment to American living, education, and career development. Develop orientation materials and presentations; assist with pre-arrival and International Welcome Week programs and services as needed.

The International Student Advisor’s general responsibilities are to:

  • Interpret complex U.S. immigration laws, regulations, policies and procedures and exercise professional judgment to advise and counsel Indiana University's international students, scholars and/or staff on all aspects of their stay in the United States and at the university.
  • Develop and maintain personal and office staff expertise with U.S. laws and regulations governing international students, scholars and/or staff.
  • Plan, develop, schedule, conduct, and evaluate programming designed to educate international students, scholars and/or staff and other IU departments on current U.S. regulations governing international students, scholars and/or staff.
  • Ensure the required information is reported to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in a timely manner and that necessary immigration documentation needed to maintain legal status of international students, scholars and/or staff is adjudicated accurately and effectively.
  • Serve as liaison to local or state government agencies regarding issues related to international students, scholars and/or staff.
