The Immigration Services Specialist will advise international students in Nonimmigrant Student (F-1 and J-1 status and international scholars in Exchange Visitor (J-1) and Nonimmigrant Worker (including, but not limited to, H-1B, O-1 and TN) status on an individual basis on immigration, financial, academic and personal matters; will meet with meet with international students and scholars during scheduled appointments and/or walk-in basis; and will serve as a Designated School Officer (Department of Homeland Security) and an Alternate Responsible Officer (Department of State).  In fulfilling this role, the Immigration Services Specialist will prepare and submit to the relevant federal agency (Department of State and Department of Homeland Security) immigration documentation on behalf of international students in F-1 and J-1 status and of international scholars in Exchange Visitor (J-1) and Nonimmigrant Worker (including, but not limited to, H-1B, O-1 and TN) status; create and maintain SEVIS records for international students in F-1 and J-1 status and for international scholars in Exchange Visitor (J-1) status; and serve as liaison to the Office of Human Resources concerning international scholars in Exchange Visitor (J-1) and Nonimmigrant Worker (including, but not limited to, H-1B, O-1 and TN) status.


  • Process initial Certificates of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status (Form I-20 or Form DS-2019) for students who need visa sponsorship from Temple University to study in the U.S.
  • Advise F-1 students, J-1 students and/or scholars, H-1B employees and new students in other visa categories on an individual basis regarding immigration, financial, financial aid, academic and personal matters.
  • Review and process all requests by students and scholars that relate to maintenance of their immigration status.
  • Assist Director with maintenance of ISSS web page.
  • Meet with international students, scholars and/or employees during scheduled appointments.
  • Participate in the development and delivery of New International Student Orientation for F-1 and J-1 students.
  • Assist with check-in of new international students on an as-needed basis.
  • Aid walk-in visitors on an as-needed basis (including prospective and current international students, scholars and/or employees).
  • Provide one-on-one orientations for incoming J-1 scholars on an as-needed basis (scheduled appointments).
  • Assist in creating and maintaining handouts in International Student and Scholar Services.
  • By virtue of being a Designated School Officer and an alternate Responsible Officer, serve as liaison between University and U.S. Department of State (DOS) and U.S. Department of Homeland Security
  • Assist Director in entering and maintaining integrity of data kept on international students and/or scholars in ISSS databases, Banner system, and SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System).
  • Assist Director and office coordinator in ordering supplies.
  • Assist Director in preparing and submitting annual reports to the Institute for International Education and DOS, as needed.
  • Develop and deliver presentations (such as J and H sessions at Health Sciences Campus) or other orientations (such as LLM).
  • Contribute to the team effort by accepting additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director for International Services, Assistant Vice President for Global Engagement, and/or the Vice Provost for Global Engagement.
